Duties

The Writer-Editor researches, writes, edits, formats, and prepares publications and promotional material (including accompanying visual and audio-visual materials) as assigned for the Kluge Center in the National and International Outreach division of the Library of Congress. The incumbent develops story ideas and works with experts in the Kluge Center and across the Library to curate content for publications and promotional material (including both print and social media advertising), employing a variety of information technology.  He or she initiates and maintains relationships with the subject-matter specialists to develop story ideas and to solicit written products, and he or she apprises subject-matter specialists of editorial standards adhered to in the preparation of products.

The incumbent writes or edits a wide range of material that is complex. The person’s writing must express those complex ideas in a way that is understandable to the layperson.  He or she produces drafts, rewrites copy, and recommends changes in wording, sentence structure, and organization to simplify and improve presentation of text.

The incumbent is required to work closely with other divisions to ensure that the Kluge Center’s website is current and up-to-date and the Kluge Center database is able to generate required information for reports, invitation lists, and other Kluge Center outreach functions.  The incumbent manages the Center’s information management and communication platforms including web, social media, database, and customer relationship management systems (CRM).

Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

Although it is the Library's policy to afford the maximum pay benefit to employees when setting rates of pay, a new appointee who has had no previous Federal service will generally be paid the minimum step of the grade.
