As an Archivist, you will:

  • Analyze and evaluate historic BPA documents to determine their continuing value, and make decisions regarding their accession or ultimate disposition. 
  • Decide on the most appropriate arrangement of archival records that will (a) provide a fixed and known location for every collection or accession so that it can be found when needed, and (b) bring related materials together in a logical order so they can be used without prior knowledge of the existence of a particular
    accession or collection.
  • Safeguard the archival collections from deterioration, damage, destruction, or from impairment of their value through disarrangement or alteration.
  • Create and present programs on various aspects of BPA history: for BPA work groups, new BPA employee orientation, museums, resource centers, retired employee organizations, customers, industry conferences, BPA Visitor Center tours, BPA anniversary history talk, and others.
  • Publish archival holdings either comprehensively or selectively in printed volumes, on DVD, or via the web.
  • Provide specific information from or about records in response to explicit inquiries.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

A. Bachelor's degree: in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.

--OR--

B. Combination of education and experience: at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Evaluation of Experience:
Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the professional experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:

Perform a variety of archival activities for a moderately large number of historical record groups which are related by administrative connection or by subject matter. Examples of qualifying experience include:

  1. Determining the purposes for which historical records were created, ascertaining their further informational or evidential value to the creating agency or company, analyzing their potential significance for scholarly or other research, assessing the costs of archival preservation, and preparing reports setting forth recommendations
    regarding the preservation or disposition of the records.
  2. Planning the digitization of a complete series of records including determining the records to be digitized, conducting the requisite historical research, and writing introductory descriptive narratives relating the administrative history of the agency or company of origin and of the records.
  3. Providing reference and research services in response to requests for information about records on specialized subjects or topics of historical interest.
  4. Analyzing and planning for the arrangement or rearrangement of historical records when the records present problems.

There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-12 level.

  5. Partnering - Develops networks and builds alliances; collaborates across boundaries to build strategic relationships and achieve common goals. 
  6. Stakeholder Management - Knowledge of the concepts, practices, and techniques used to identify, engage, influence, and monitor relationships with individuals and groups connected to a work effort; including those actively involved, those who exert influence over the process and its results, and those who have a vested interest in the outcome (positive or negative).
  7. Written Communication - Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience.
