Duties

Help

  • Administer general and local anesthetics
  • Remove impacted, damaged and non-restorable teeth
  • Evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth to determine whether problems exist currently or might occur in the future
  • Collaborate with other professionals such as restorative dentists to plan treatment
  • Perform surgery to prepare the mouth for dental implants or dentures and to aid in the regeneration of deficient bone and gum tissues
  • Diagnose and remove tumors and other abnormal growths of the oral and facial regions using surgical instruments
  • Treat infections of the oral cavity, salivary glands, jaws and neck
  • Treat problems affecting the oral mucosa such as mouth ulcers and infections
  • Provide emergency treatment of facial injuries including facial lacerations, intra-oral lacerations and fractured facial bones
  • Treat TMJ or snoring problems
  • Clear patients for surgeries related to transplants, cardiovascular and orthopedic procedures

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.

Preferred Experience:
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is desired. If selected for this position, per VHA Directive 1177, you must possess current BCLS certification as you will provide direct clinical care to patients in this position.
  • Board Certified/Board Eligible in Dental Medicine or Oral Surgery


Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Light Lifting, 45 pounds and over; walking, standing, kneeling and sitting; repeated bending; both legs required; pulling hand over hand; ability to distinguish basic color and shades of color; reaching above the shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking; correctable vision and hearing; mental and emotional stability.

Applicants and individuals appointed on or after November 30, 1999, who have been licensed, registered, or certified (as applicable to such position) in more than one State and who had such license, registration, or certification revoked for professional misconduct, professional incompetence, or substandard care by any of those States, or voluntarily relinquished a license, registration or certification in any of those States after being notified in writing by that State of potential termination for professional misconduct, professional incompetence, or substandard care, are not eligible for appointment, unless the revoked or surrendered license, registration, or certification is restored to a full and unrestricted status.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of 26 days per leave year (1 day per pay period).
