Duties

Help

As deemed necessary by the pharmacy supervisor, assists in other patient care areas (including outpatient pharmacy services) to maintain the consistency of overall pharmacy services. However, primary assignments of work schedule and tours would involve inpatient pharmacy services. Inpatient services may include such areas as aseptic admixture preparation including cytotoxic agents, automatic and on-demand ward stock replenishment, maintenance and operation of automated prepackaging storage and dispensing equipment, assembly and documentation of controlled substance requests, and properly packaging with documentation of single unit of use medications. Ensures all inventory automation equipment in the pharmacy service is properly refilled and utilized to maintain inventory controls. Participates in ensuring the Operating Room satellite is properly stocked for injectable, non-injectable and controlled substance medications.

Work Schedule: Sunday thru Saturday - 7:30 AM - 4:00PM, 3:30 PM - 12:00 AM, and 12:00 AM - 8:00 AM. (Rotating Shifts)

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

U.S. citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent OR at least 3 months experience.

Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required.

Loss of Credential: An employee in this occupation who fails to obtain licensure/certification/registration within the required time frame, or who fails to maintain the required licensure/certification/registration must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in termination of employment.

English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.

Preferred Experience: Aseptic technique for Compounded Sterile Product preparation in the IV Room.
Experience with automated dispensing equipment such as Pyxis, Talyst, Omnicell, and ScriptPro.
Unit Dose, pre-pack, and ward stock dispensing/inspections.Control Substance receiving, dispensing, and destruction.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements listed above, applicants must also meet the following criteria for the GS-06 level.

Experience: One year experience demonstrating the Knowledge, Skills, and abilities (KSAs) at the GS-05 level in order to qualify for the GS-06. KSAs at the GS-05 level are:

1. Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.
2. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.
3. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
4. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.

Grade Determinations: GS-06 Level Pharmacy Technicians: Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

Additional information

Physical Requirements: Lifts up to 45 lbs and stands and walks for five to eight hours a day.
