Serves as a Research Geneticist Plants at the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, DC and Beltsville, MD.

Research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected.  For this reason, you are encouraged to apply at all grade levels.  A peer review will be required for selections made at grades GS-13 and above and the selectee will be required to submit supplemental materials.

Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. *Final grade level may be determined by a peer review panel.

Major Duties:

Serves as a Research Geneticist at the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, DC and Beltsville, MD. The incumbent will be responsible for developing new urban tree selections or cultivars with improved tolerances to stress, diseases, and pests, as well as non-invasive tree selections from both non-indigenous and native genera for the nursery and landscape industries and for the public. The incumbent collaborates with other ARS, university and private sector scientists to build the multi-disciplinary team necessary for this research. The incumbent must analyze, interpret and disseminate the findings in the form of reports, presentations and publications in scientific journals.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified by grade level.

Your education and experience will be evaluated against all qualification requirements (basic and any additional requirements) listed below.

Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Basic Requirements:

Genetics Series, 0440

Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.



Additional Requirements: 

In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.


Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

GS-12: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service OR have a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the duties of the position OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience. The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-12 level are:

  • Experience in conducting molecular, genetic or biochemical related research on plants;
  • Experience performing genetic mapping, or chemical, biochemical, or molecular analyses such a (Simple Sequence Repeat) SSRs to investigate complex traits such as abiotic stress resistance, genetic diversity, or plant identity;
  • Experience developing new or improved varieties of plant species; and
  • Experience publishing research in peer-reviewed scientific journals in plant genetics and/or plant breeding.


GS-13: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service.  The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position are:

  • Experience planning and conducting independent and collaborative molecular, genetic, or biochemical research related to herbaceous or woody horticultural crops.
  • Experience developing new or improved varieties of plant species that are important to the horticulture industry;
  • Primary authorship of publications of considerable interest and value to the field of breeding, crop improvement, or plant evaluation; and
  • Receive invitations to make presentations to professional societies and others outside the organization on technical matters and practices in the area of breeding, crop improvement, or plant evaluation.
