Summary

This position is part of the Oahu National Wildlife Refuge Complex. As a Biological Science Technician you will be responsible for assisting in operations devoted to the recovery of four of Hawaii's six endemic, endangered, waterbirds.

This is a Term appointment, not-to-exceed 13 months, which can be extended for a total appointment of 4 years.

Duties

Help

  • Assists in conducting wildlife censuses and surveys to collect biological data using standard collection methods.
  • Captures, applies visual and radio tags, and gathers physiological and spatial data on wildlife.
  • Assists in monitoring and implementing activities related to conservation, management and/or control of wildlife.
  • Assists with implementing habitat management activities designed to monitor, control, and eradicate non-native
    or invasive plant species and/or limit plant disease outbreaks.
  • Monitors elements of the physical environment, such as temperature, precipitation, stream flow, snow depth,
    wind speed, and/or humidity.
  • Prepares biological data using a variety of database software programs for inclusion in biological reports.
  • Enters and retrieves data from geographic information systems (GIS) and/or other information management
    systems.

  • Work Schedule: Work may require working evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain USFWS approved certification(s) within 6 months of employment. All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Certification and Utility-terrain vehicle (UTV) Certification and Pesticide certification.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS-05 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:

  1. I have one year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the federal service, or equivalent non-Federal experience. Specialized experience is defined as: 1) assists in conducting of plant monitoring surveys; 2)assists in conducting of wildlife surveys; 3) capturing, handling, and tagging or collaring wildlife; and, 4) assists in preparing educational materials and/ or presenting information. NOTE: Your resume must contain sufficient information clearly showing your performance of all of these duties; OR
  2. I have successful completed 4 years above high school education leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics; OR
  3. I have a combination of specialized experience (as in A above) and education (as in B above), when prorated, combine to meet the qualification requirements of this position. Experience and education are each computed as percentages of their requirements and must equal 100 percent when combined. Only education beyond the second year is creditable to meet this standard.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
