    This position is located in the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), Smithsonian Institution.  The employee serves as Assistant Managing Editor of the American Indian Magazine and is responsible for the areas of research, writing, editing, production, and marketing in support of it (in both its print and digital platforms).

    • Sets short- and long-term plans and schedules for the museum's magazine production efforts and develops, directs, and evaluates all facets associated with the research, writing, publication, and marketing of American Indian Magazine under the direction of the Editor in Chief and with the support of the Managing Editor.  Provides proposed story ideas and production schedules for discussion and approval to maintain the consistent pace of the quarterly print and digital magazine product platforms.

    • Performs editorial review of all manuscripts and other copy material for cultural sensitivity, content, accuracy, appropriateness, journalistic standards, and writing style.  Recommends ways for authors to improve manuscripts before the editing process; ensures copy and content are properly edited, and that design elements serve the needs and requirements of each article.  Assists in image research or rights and permissions work as applicable in collaboration with the magazine's contract researcher and authors.

    • Writes copy, which requires attentiveness to style, conciseness, and factual accuracy.  All writing is expected to be of the highest quality, communicating the museum's mission and activities in a lively, accessible fashion.

    • Conducts qualitative and quantitative research in support of content development and fact checking for a variety of museum projects, and works with curators, authors, and others to ensure error-free copy.
