Duties

Help

In this position, you will be responsible for information management, situational awareness, command and control in a pivotal policy role from day one.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

  • Overseeing and monitoring the Sector’s response to Search and Rescue (SAR) cases in order to minimize loss of life and property at sea.
  • Developing search action plans while investigating and coordinating ongoing activities and operations within the Area of Responsibility (AOR).
  • Providing command and control over Coast Guard assets in all maritime law enforcement operations within the Sector AOR.
  • Maintaining command and control of response operations for oil discharges and hazardous substance releases within Sector AOR.
  • Analyzing and disseminating a variety of nautical data such as current, tides and weather.
  • Interacting with federal, state, and local government agencies while coordinating response to SAR, Law Enforcement, PWCS, MER, and other Coast Guard missions.

  • This position requires a Secret clearance.
  • Within 1 year, applicant must obtain Search and Rescue certificates.

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. This includes Time-In-Grade requirements for current status employees applying through merit promotion procedures. Status applicants applying for a promotion must have 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade.

Qualifications

You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one of the following:

A. One year of specialized experience at the GS-09 grade level or equivalent that demonstrates the

  • Collecting initial information to classify search and rescue (SAR) cases and begin case documentation;
  • Providing tracking and other sensor information to support missions;
  • Providing course and speed information to response assets to coordinate arrivals at a particular point; and
  • writing final situation reports about search and rescue (SAR) cases.
OR

B. Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

OR

3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree

OR

LL.M., if related

OR

C. A combination of successfully completed equivalent education and experience. This will be calculated using your resume and unofficial transcripts or a list of courses/course hours submitted with your application.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. There is a 13.01% (of basic pay) Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) authorized for this position location. Please see Nonforeign Area Cost-of-Living Allowances for more information. In addition to the COLA, the Guam's Locality rate is 15.37%.
