Duties

Help

Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Using a variety of computer software programs such as Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Maintaining databases.
  • Updating webpages with text and graphical files.
  • Maintaining, appointments, calendars, and schedules
  • Receiving customers and contacting staff members as appropriate
  • Contacting members of the staff and/or agency as directed
  • Assisting in editing and compositing letters and reports.
  • Providing timely and courteous service to internal and external customers
Work Schedule: Full-time, Part-time, or intermittent schedule available. Must be able to work at least 20 hours per week.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/14/2018.

Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled. Applicants must upload documentation to show enrollment in Fall 2018 courses to be considered eligible.

Highly desirable students will have experience in information technology, research administration, or advance Microsoft Computer skills with emphasis in working with databases.

You may qualify based on education and/or experience as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: using Microsoft Office, maintaining databases, composing and editing letters, responsive to internal and external customers, etc. OR,
  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the experience required. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 4 year of education above high school OR,
  • Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond the above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary. Typically the employee will sit comfortably and do the work. There may be some walking and/or standing, bending, and carrying of light items like paper or books.

Additional information

You are excluded from health benefits coverage if you are expected to work less than 130 hours per month for at least 90 days.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
