Occasional travel - Periodic overnight travel is required to meet research objectives. Monitoring or data collection of distant honey bee colonies located in remote locations will necessitate travel. Additionally, this position has international impact so travel to meetings or visiting collaborators within and outside the USA is expected.

Duties

Help

The incumbent will be responsible for research on the factors contributing to honey bee colony loss. Develops long-term longitudinal studies of spatial and temporal changes in bee populations exposed to a number of abiotic and biotic stresses and management practices. Establishes and maintains collaborations with other scientists to conduct studies on the effects of stress factors on honey bee and colony health. Transfers knowledge and technology through scholarly publications, patents and presentations to scientific and industry groups. As a member of a research team, the incumbent will address the broad area of honey bee colony survivorship by developing and analyzing long-term baseline datasets that can be used to parse the relative importance of suspected factors that contribute to colony loss. Works with other scientists and collaborators to develop long-term datasets of colony stress, growth, and survival. Methodologies involve basic beekeeping practices, in vitro rearing of honey bees, and fundamental techniques in invertebrate physiology, chemical control use and application, and other crop protection related technologies.

Qualifications

A pplicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified by grade level.

Your education and experience will be evaluated against all qualification requirements (basic and any additional requirements) listed below.

Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Basic Requirements:

Research Entomologist, GS-0414: Degree: entomology; or a related discipline of the biological or physical sciences that included at least 16 semester hours in entomology OR combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major that included course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.


In addition to the educational requirements above applicants must also meet the following:


GS-12: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level are defined as:

Experience conducting and reporting research on general beekeeping techniques and honey bee biology.

GS-13: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level are defined as:

Experience planning, conducting and reporting research on general beekeeping techniques and honey bee biology.

Experience conducting and reporting individual or team research on honey bee nutrition, varroa management, bee pathology OR modeling bee population dynamics.
