Duties for the position in OSMR include:
Plans, conducts, and/or directs a continuing research and evaluation program in mathematical statistics applicable to BLS programs. Provides technical advice to other Federal agencies and representatives of other countries.
Prepares technical reports on mathematical and statistical computing methods and procedures. Presents research methods and evaluation results at technical seminars and professional meetings for the purpose of conveying information, soliciting comments from colleagues, or for critical review by the scientific community.
Assists the BLS program offices with the solution of technical problems related to the development of sampling, weighting or estimation methods.
Establishes and maintains professional relationships with representatives of other agencies and research organizations to keep abreast of developments in the application of mathematical statistical techniques relevant to BLS programs.
Represents the Bureau in statistical exchanges with researchers in academic, government, and other research institutions.
Duties for the position in OCWC include:
Serves as technical expert and authority providing consultation and guidance to OCWC Program managers on statistical methodology for complex sample surveys and other statistical issues.
Identifies the need for and proposes, leads, plans, and conducts original research and development activities in the areas of mathematical statistics, data and computational science, and statistical methodology for complex surveys.
Explores and evaluates advanced proposals and modern research from BLS staff and external academic researchers, data users, and key stakeholders in the fields of mathematical statistics, data and computational science, and statistical methodology for complex surveys and assesses their utility in satisfying program and mission objectives and the resolution of complex, unusual, critical, or severe problems facing the NCS and OSHS programs.
Serves as a member or team leader of interdisciplinary project or matrix management teams for the NCS and OSHS programs.
Writes technical specifications, documents methodologies, reports on activities, and produces formal and informal research reports. There will be a frequent need to prepare informal reports, tables, and technical summaries for team members, BLS staff and program managers, and BLS executives.
Requires a probationary period if the requirement has not been met.
Must be at least 16 years of age.

Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: A degree that included 24 semester hours in mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In Addition to Basic Requirements:
For the GS-12: applicants must have either (a) one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-11 in the Federal Service or(b) a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in statistics, biostatistics, computer science, mathematics, or a closely related field. Specialized experience must be in or related to the field of statistics and mathematics and must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position to be filled. This experience must have (1) led to the development of a basic principle, product, concept, or method; (2) provided a body of information that opened the way for advancements in statistical methodologies; and/or (3) led to submissions of one or more articles to peer-reviewed journals.
