About the Position:
This is a full-time civilian faculty position at the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) as provided under Title 10 USC 4021. Initial appointment may be up to four years, with the first two years probationary. The appointment may be renewed in one- to five-year increments thereafter. Academic rank will be based on the selectee's academic credentials, experience, and professional accomplishments; however, the focus and salary are at the Assistant Professor level.

Duties

Help
  • Contributing to and teaching core courses related to national security policy and strategy formulation, theories of war and strategy, and (as appropriate) regional studies.
  • Reviewing course material for accuracy and relevance.
  • Engaging in scholarship that advances knowledge in fields relevant to the curriculum.
  • Providing counsel to faculty and students on subjects related to history, theory and strategy and war, strategy, international relations, government, and other U.S. policy and strategy systems and procedures.
  • Designing and teaching elective courses and directed studies for students.
  • Assist in developing models for historical understanding of use to strategic leaders.
  • Coordinating with external agencies on behalf of the U.S. Army War College.
  • Engaging in service (internal and external) in support of institutional missions.
  • Serving annually as a faculty instructor for one seminar, faculty advisor for up to six students, and project advisor for student research projects.
  • Other duties may include supporting the development and execution of regional studies courses; and/or supporting the development and execution of the National Security Seminar.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Applicants will be rated based on the criteria listed below by a panel of subject matter experts appointed with the purpose of identifying the best-qualified candidates.

1. Must have an established record of superlative teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, including as a teaching assistant and as the instructor of record. Experience at the graduate level is preferred.

2. Record of scholarly research and publication commensurate with the rank of assistant professor-or evidence of great potential for such research and publication-in areas relevant to the curriculum, to include military history, diplomatic history, history of national security policy and strategy, international history, and related areas. This includes both peer-reviewed publications as well as media and on-line engagements.

3. Ability to prepare, teach, and lecture on subjects related to theories of war and strategy, the history of strategy, national security policy, and strategy formulation.

4. The ability to conceptualize, design, and write lesson plans that support the Resident Education Program (REP) at the U.S. Army War College. Preference will be given to those can develop lessons on continental military/landpower theorists, the military/diplomatic history of a particular region (including the United States), and the culture of strategy.

5. Refined oral and written communication skills, including the ability to serve as a student advisor for written research projects.

6. Must have master's degree (required) in history or closely-related field. A PhD or equivalent evidence of extensive original scholarly research and writing consistent with the rank of assistant professor is strongly preferred.

7. A record of successful service to the historical profession including membership in and service to professional scholarly societies, public history initiatives, or military and defense organizations.
