Summary

This position is located in the Computational Science Research & Partnerships Division, Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Office of Science (SC). The mission of the Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) is to deliver forefront computational and networking capabilities to mathematicians nationwide that will enable them to extend the frontiers of science. This is accomplished through discovery, development, and deployment of the computational and networking tools in applied mathematics, computer science, and high­performance networks which enable scientific researchers to analyze, model, simulate, and predict complex physical, chemical, and biological phenomena important to the accomplishment of the Department of Energy's missions.

The Division is responsible for funding and administering fundamental research programs in applied mathematics, computer science, networking, and advanced scientific computing software tools, and computational partnerships with other SC offices and with other DOE elements that utilize tera- to peta-scale computing resources for modeling and simulating complex scientific and engineering problems across the entire civilian scope of DOE.

A successful candidate in this position will…

  • Serve as a Program Manager and technical authority in the field of applied mathematics relating to computational science
  • Plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate research program in the field on a national and international level.

Help

As a Mathematician, you will:

  • Serve as Program Manager determining scientific focus and direction for Applied Mathematical Sciences Program, including: preparing calls for proposals, organizing peer reviews, recommending funding allocations, setting up Principal Investigator meetings, acting as a liaison on committees, and monitoring scientific progress of the program.
  • Serve as a technical authority in the field of applied mathematics relating to computational science, and plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates research programs on a national and international level.
  • Examine and determine research needs and opportunities of this research program against scientific and technological advances and of potential needs of the DOE.
  • Evaluate research proposals and performance via technical judgment, merit review, site visits/reviews and panel reviews.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is defined as developing an applied mathematical research program; providing guidance on a broad range of research activities; directing the conduct of basic research applied mathematics, including publication of research findings; and coordinating and organizing funding allocations.

  1. Knowledge of physical science, mathematics, and/or high performance computational sciences and related disciplines.
  2. Ability to plan, budget, justify, and allocate funds among a variety of competing scientific research program/projects.
  3. Ability to plan, direct, and evaluate new and highly complex basic research programs, projects, and policies.
  4. Knowledge of the policies and procedures for merit and peer reviews to manage a complex scientific research program.
  5. Ability to communicate in writing to prepare analytical documents, research findings, and solicitations for research proposals.
  6. Ability to communicate orally to serve as a spokesperson for the program area, the Office, the organization, and/or the agency in the broad scientific areas of responsibility. This includes the ability to represent these areas on high visibility committees and planning activities.

EDUCATION:

For the GS-1520, Mathematician, you must possess the following Basic Requirements:

A. Degree: mathematics; or the equivalent of a major that included at least 24 semester hours in mathematics.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in mathematics (including at least 24 semester hours in mathematics), as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

The total course work in either A or B above must have included differential and integral calculus and, in addition, four advanced mathematics courses requiring calculus or equivalent mathematics courses as a prerequisite.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
