Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected.  For this reason, you are encouraged to apply at all grade levels.  A peer review will be required for selections made at grades GS-13 and above and the selectee will be required to submit supplemental materials.

Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. *Final grade level may be determined by a peer review panel.

Help

The incumbent will apply plant and soil sciences to address issues related to crop productivity and soil and water management, to develop and deliver improved technologies, management strategies, and planning tools that help evaluate and manage economic and environment risks, opportunities and tradeoffs. Develops guidelines for multi-use crops and grazing-based livestock production systems that depend on a near-continuous supply of diverse, high quality forage. Investigates response of forage grasses and legumes, nutritional quality, seed production and tolerance to abiotic environmental stressors. Research will integrate with research activities pertaining to cool-season, perennial grass forage plant breeding/genomics, agro-ecosystem function, and livestock grazing.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified by grade level.

Your education and experience will be evaluated against all qualification requirements (basic and any additional requirements) listed below.

Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Basic Requirements:

Research Agronomist, GS-0471: Degree: agronomy; or related discipline of science that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in the basic plant sciences, including at least 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, such as those dealing with plant breeding, crop production, and soil and crop management OR combination of education and experience: at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, including a minimum of 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Research Plant Physiologist, GS-0435: Degree: botany or plant physiology; or a related scientific discipline that included at least 10 semester hours in plant physiology.

In addition to the educational requirements above applicants must also meet the following:

GS-12: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level are defined as:

Experience producing publications as a contributor or the primary author that contribute to or fill in gaps in an existing theory or framework;

Experience developing information or providing technical support to research projects;

Experience contributing to a project in the agronomy/plant physiologist field of research

Experience presenting information to professional societies within and outside of the organization in the area of specialization.

GS-13: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level are defined as:

Experience producing publications as the primary author that are of interest and value to the field of research;

Conceiving and formulating research ideas that support or produce studies by others;

Experience developing products in the agronomy/plant physiology field of research that solve important scientific problems;

Experience presenting information to professional societies within and outside of the organization on technical matters and practices in the area of agronomy/plant physiology.
