Summary

This position is located within the Department of the Interior, Office of the Secretary, Indian Arts and Crafts Board, Museum of the Plains Indian in Browning, Montana. The Indian Arts and Crafts Board's (IACB) mission is to promote the economic development of American Indians, Indian tribes, and Alaska Natives (Indians) through the promotion of Indian arts and crafts and the expansion and protection of the market for the products of Indian art and craftsmanship pursuant to the IACB's statutory authorities.

Under the immediate supervision of the Curator, the incumbent carries out assigned duties in connection with the care of the Museum’s permanent collections and assigned physical space.

This vacancy may be used to fill additional positions as vacancies become available. 

Salary Information: GS-04: $29,847 - $38,798 per annum.  First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the lower salary range of the grade level.

The Office of the Secretary has determined that the duties of this position are not suitable for telework.

NOTE: A valid and current State Driver’s License is required.

NOTE: Weekend work is required during the months of June to September. The incumbent will be expected to work Tuesday through Saturday.

This is a permanent, full-time, career/career conditional appointment.

Duties

Help

At the full performance level (GS-04) the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Assists Curator in the design and installation of displays of the MPI's special one-person exhibition series for their proper presentation. Ensure that all titles, texts, labels, photos, diagrams, and other graphics are compiled and produced in accordance with established standard and schedules.
  2. When necessary, responsible for a.) the building of props and pedestals, b.) the painting of ceilings and walls of galleries and interior and exterior exhibit cases according to exhibit installation plans, c.) the moving of exhibit cases, equipment, works of art,  d.) the handling of Plexiglas exhibit case fronts and special exhibition structures requiring glass for paintings, e.) the handling of paintings, f.) the installation of works of art, and g.) the accomplishment of any other necessary preparatory duties as needed.
  3. Responsible for the conservation and preservation of the historical and contemporary specimens in the MPI's permanent collection. Assures the application of conservation methods to insure against deterioration or loss of rare materials by using established scientific methods and devising storage, installation requirements and other means of safekeeping.
  4. Researches and documents the creative works and careers of contemporary Native American artists and craftsmen. This may involve field work, interviewing artist and craftsmen, researching publications and other educational source materials, and contacting personnel of other cultural institutions.
  5. Compiles, processes and maintains data obtained into a variety of Native American artist and craftsmen information systems such as record, research and photography documentation files.
  6. Assists the Curator and/or Museum Technician with regular administrative tasks of the museum including maintaining supplies and materials and requisition of items as instructed.  Checks and responds to emails the from the museum's public account. Operates a government vehicle to obtain mail and supplies.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-4 Museum Aid position, all applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

GS-04

General Experience: One full year of general experience using the tools, techniques, procedures, or methods related to the operation of a museum or similar collection, or to the handling, storage, care, protection, or recordkeeping of such a collection. Experience may have been gained in a museum, college or university, antique shop, commercial art gallery, or other setting involving work with collections of valuable objects or specimens requiring specialized care and handling.,

OR,

Education: 2 full years of education above high school with 6 semester hours in courses related to art, history, museum studies, or other courses related to the position to be filled. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must possess a valid state driver’s license.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
