Duties

Help
  • Research and apply mathematical, statistical, and text analyses using software and in coordination with other analysts, through the use of CRISP-DM (cross-industry standard process for data mining)/Agile methods.
  • Communicate analytical methods and results to teammates and prepare technical documentation.
  • Assist project teams by translating requirements into useful mathematical, statistical, or text analyses that contribute value to the organization?s mission.
  • Assist with preparation of proposals by outlining the hypothesis, requirements, and potential impact of conducting the analysis.
  • Provide data preparation for statistical analysis.
  • Effectively work in teams to complete analytical projects.

Qualifications

You must meet the minimum qualification requirements as stated in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Operating Manual, Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/Standards/group-stds/gs-prof.asp.

Basic Requirement: A degree that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics, OR a combination of education and experience that includes at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Note: Courses acceptable toward meeting the mathematics course requirement must have included at least four of the following: differential calculus, integral calculus, advanced calculus, theory of equations, vector analysis, advanced algebra, linear algebra, mathematical logic, differential equations, or any other advanced course in mathematics for which one of these was a prerequisite. Courses in mathematical statistics or probability theory with a prerequisite of elementary calculus or more advanced courses will be accepted toward meeting the mathematics requirements, with the provision that the same course cannot be counted toward both the mathematics and the statistics requirement.

GS-07 Level: In addition to meeting the basic requirement, qualified applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade in the Federal service (GS-05), which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience is defined as applying mathematical, statistical, or
text analysis using software packages.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-07 GRADE LEVEL: One full year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement (SAA) may be substituted to meet the specialized experience requirement. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements.
Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership. Bachelor's degree required or a senior in college can apply with certain considerations (please use link to OPM to determine if you qualify)
(1) Class standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
(2) Grade Point Average (GPA) - 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.
(3) Election to membership in specific National Scholastic Honor Societies.

GS-09 Level: In addition to meeting the basic requirement, qualified applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade in the Federal service (GS-07), which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience is defined as applying mathematical, statistical, or text analysis using software packages and communicating analysis results.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-09 GRADE LEVEL: A Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. may be substituted to meet the specialized experience requirement. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements.

GS-11 Level: In addition to meeting the basic requirement, qualified applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade in the Federal service (GS-09), which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience is defined as applying mathematical, statistical, or text analysis using software packages, communicating analysis results, and using those results to contribute to an organization's mission.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-11 GRADE LEVEL: A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M. may be substituted to meet the specialized experience requirement. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements.
