You will serve as a Mathematical Statistician in the State Data Reporting Systems Division of the National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA), Office of Data Acquisition. (ODA) reporting to the Division Chief through the Team Leader of the Crash Report Sampling System (CRSS) Team. CRSS is a national database on traffic safety. The CRSS operates through contracts. The contractors collect, verify, and code information based on a sample of approximately 50,000 motor vehicle crashes that occur annually in the U.S. The primary source of data is the police crash report (PAR).
In this capacity, under the general program guidance of CRSS Team Leader, the incumbent assists in the planning and management of the progress of CRSS sampling activities.
The ideal candidate for this position is highly self-motivated and possesses excellent mathematical and statistical analytical capabilities; self-starter and taking prompt actions to accomplish tasks to further the organization’s objectives. The ideal candidate performs to achieve goals beyond what is required; and being proactive is critical to success in this position. The ideal candidate has skills in applying quality control techniques sufficient to support the infrastructure/design, implementation, and evaluation of a quality-controlled system; can adapt to a fast-paced work environment and effectively handle the nuance challenges that come along with crash data sampling activities. NHTSA is seeking a candidate capable of developing collaborative relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals for the sampling activities of a NHTSA’s data system. Experience working with large data bases and experience working with Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) programming is preferred.

MANDATORY EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
A. Degree: that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.

B. Combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Evaluation of Education:
Courses acceptable toward meeting the mathematics course requirement of paragraphs A or B above must have included at least four of the following: differential calculus, integral calculus, advanced calculus, theory of equations, vector analysis, advanced algebra, linear algebra, mathematical logic, differential equations, or any other advanced course in mathematics for which one of these was a prerequisite. Courses in mathematical statistics or probability theory with a prerequisite of elementary calculus or more advanced courses will be accepted toward meeting the mathematics requirements, with the provision that the same course cannot be counted toward both the mathematics and the statistics requirement.
