The National Science Foundation (NSF) is seeking a candidate for the position of Senior Advisor for Strategic Engagements in the Directorate of Computer and Information Science and Engineering.
This position is that of Senior Advisor for Strategic Engagements within the Office of the Assistant Director (OAD) in the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE). The CISE directorate, responsible for research and education in computer and information science and engineering as well as research cyberinfrastructure for the broader science and engineering enterprise, consists of four units in addition to OAD.
The Senior Advisor, a member of the CISE senior leadership team, assists the CISE Assistant Director and Deputy Assistant Director in the formulation of the directorate’s scientific goals, objectives, and priorities; the integration of scientific and technical priorities into effective policies, strategies, and programs; and the conduct of program planning, implementation, and evaluation procedures, all in the context of strategic engagements with external partners at other agencies and in other sectors. The incumbent serves as a Senior Advisor for CISE by preparing relevant analyses that in turn provide a basis for major decisions in priority setting, directorate and program planning and internal management, and translating scientific decisions into effective budgetary and operational activities, again in the context of strategic engagements with external partners at other agencies in other sectors.

The Senior Advisor for Strategic Engagements assists the CISE Assistant Director and Deputy Assistant Director in the formulation of the directorate’s goals, objectives and priorities, the integration of scientific and technical priorities into effective policies, strategies, and programs, and the conduct of program planning, implementation, and evaluation procedures. In particular, the directorate’s activities have increasingly significant multi-agency and cross-sector dimensions in terms of policy and programmatic development and operations. The incumbent, who takes a lead role in high-level and strategic engagements with other agencies and sectors, serves as a Senior Advisor for CISE by leading such engagements. The incumbent prepares relevant analyses that provide a basis for major decisions in priority setting, directorate and program planning and internal management, and translating scientific decisions into effective budgetary and operational activities. He/she is current in the trends of research, education, and research infrastructure in the full range of areas supported by the directorate; is cognizant of current and proposed initiatives impacting the directorate; provides advice on the implications of such on the directorate’s future programs and budgets; and demonstrates strategic leadership in the directorate’s engagements with other agencies and sectors.
