The National Gallery of Art serves the United States in a national role by preserving, collecting, exhibiting, and fostering the understanding of works of art at the highest possible museum and scholarly standards. The Office of Protection Services (AOP) ensures the safety and security of employees, visitors and the objects entrusted to the Gallery, while allowing for the appropriate level of public access to Gallery resources. The Gallery Protection Officer (GPO) performs security officer duties in protecting property, enforcing law and order, preserving the peace, preventing crime, and detecting and investigating violations of the law within and on the perimeters of the Gallery. The GPO has limited arrest authority and normally serves in uniform, but is not armed. S/he serves in various posts during hours when the Gallery is open to the public.

The incumbent:
REQUIREMENTS: The work requires manual dexterity and physical fitness in order to restrain any person who may represent a threat to public safety and/or to the works of art. Incumbent will be required to stand daily while on duty for a total of at least 5 ½ hours, with up to 2 ½ hours without a break. Position may also require continuous walking, climbing ladders, bending, kneeling, ascending or descending stairways, carrying a fire extinguisher and working in low light areas. Incumbent will be expected to work on weekends and on holidays the Gallery is open to the public.
