This vacancy is for a Student Trainee (Geographer) position in various divisions located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. The Census Bureau is accessible from the Metro Rail Green Line - Suitland Station.

A trial period may be required.

This Job Opportunity Announcement may be used to fill other Geographer Intern, GS-0199-07/09, positions within the Census Bureau in the same geographical location with the same qualifications and specialized experience.

If a degree has been obtained, please include a letter of acceptance into another degree or certificate program to show proof of eligibility.

This position will be filled under the Pathways Internship Program. This Program allows students to gain paid work experience while pursuing a degree, diploma or certificate at a qualifying institution. Under the Pathways Program, students who successfully complete all work, study, qualifications, and other eligibility requirements may be offered a permanent position work our agency upon graduation or completion of a qualifying certificate. At the Agency's discretion, students hired under the Pathways Program may be non-competitively converted to a term, career, or career-conditional appointment with a possible Full Performance Level (FPL) of GS-05, GS-07, GS-09, GS-11, GS-12, or GS-13 (FPL varies based on hiring department).

This position is in the excepted service.

This position is eligible for telework; additional criteria will be required (e.g., supervisory approval).

This is a bargaining unit position.

Help

The individual selected for this position will perform the following duties at the GS-07 level:

  • Review and provide input for a variety of geographic materials that may include: maps, imagery, coordinates, tables, reports, technical specifications, presentations, and other items. Works with more senior staff to take appropriate steps to resolve errors and inconsistencies.
  • Under the guidance of experienced team members, prepares drafts of specialized maps, tables, and lists of geographic data as needed for periodic censuses, surveys, and geographic projects.
  • Work with a team to prepare manuals, reference guides, procedures, and/or reports for geographic projects within specified guidelines.
  • Perform activities associated with the update, and/or maintenance of a topologically integrated geographic database that includes addresses, structure points, linear features, geographic areas and their boundaries.
  • Assist in managing geographic projects, programs, and operations by supporting experienced team members with resolving problems, and monitoring and making periodic inspections of work in progress. Monitors operational schedules and quality and reports concerns to team leaders.

  • Review and edit for completeness, consistency, accuracy, and validity, a variety of geographic materials that may include: maps, imagery, coordinates, tables, reports, technical specifications, presentations, and other items. Works with more senior staff to take appropriate steps to resolve errors and inconsistencies.
  • Prepare drafts of specialized maps, tables, and lists of geographic data as needed for periodic censuses, surveys, and geographic projects.
  • Work with a team to prepare manuals, reference guides, procedures, and/or reports for geographic projects within specified guidelines.
  • Perform activities associated with the update, and/or maintenance of a topologically integrated geographic database that includes addresses, structure points, linear features, geographic areas and their boundaries.
  • Assist in managing geographic projects, programs, and operations, by facilitating the flow of materials between work sites, training staff, resolving problems, and monitoring and making periodic inspections of work in progress. Ensures that operations stay on schedule and that quality standards are met.

Qualifications

Minimum Education Requirement:

Degree: Geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.

AND

EDUCATION:

GS-07: Sucessfully completed one full academic year of graduate level education, at least 18 credits (27 quarter hours), or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree. S.A.A. is based on

(1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society:

1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.

2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:

a. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum;

or b. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.


GS-09: Successfully completed two academic years of graduate level education, or a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree, at least 36 credit hours (54 quarter hours).
