This position is located in the Applied Research and Methods (ARM), Center for Science, Technology and Engineering (CSTE). ARM contributes to the overall quality of the information that GAO provides in support of Congressional and Federal agency decision making; and provides objective support to GAO teams. The team is led by the Managing Director, who directs the design and execution of appropriate methodologies that help GAO reports and other documents improve government operations through subordinate operational centers: the Center for Design, Methods and Analysis; the Center for Economics; the Center for Evaluation Methods and Issues; the Center for Enhanced Analytics; and the Center for Science, Technology and Engineering. The centers offer expertise in many areas including cost analysis, engagement design, economics, data analysis, evaluation, science, statistics, surveys, technology, engineering, and IT security.
(CSTE) helps teams with engagements on system acquisition, contractor evaluation and cost estimation, systems development and reengineering, investment and technology management, and computer security and vulnerability assessment, as well as counterterrorism analysis, including weapons detection and disaster preparedness. CSTE also identifies best practices in the private and public sectors and uses them as criteria for GAO’s work.

The CSTE is seeking experienced professionals to serve as either a Physical Science Analyst or a General Engineer; responsible for conducting original research and analysis toward the production of technology and/or components of mission team engagements involving related areas of experise (physical science or engineering). Specifically, the incumbent:
Candidates must possess the education and specialized experience as stated for this position.

Physical Scientist - Series 1301
A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
