The Legal Assistant provides information and assistance to visitors, claimants, petitioners, and/or representatives in response to telephone, walk-in, or written inquiries. Acts as organizational unit first point of contact, greeting and directing visitors to the appropriate staff member, after ascertaining reason for visit and apprising staff member of the same. Accepts service of legal documents, reviews them for correct form and timeliness, and annotates case files and status records to reflect receipt and due date for response or other required actions. Receives and distributes incoming mail for assigned organizational unit and embeds communications in the electronic time and case management system(s). Responds to administrative inquiries from client facilities and departments, searches files in response to requests for information, communicates status of information requests, and either provides the information from files/records or refers the request to the appropriate office or staff. Enters and maintains calendars and follow up dates to help ensure that deadlines are met and effective legal services are delivered. Utilizes available technology needed for organizing, maintaining, managing and safeguarding information.
