Duties

Help

As a General Engineer GS-0801-13 your typical work assignments will include the following:

  • Provides engineering inspections and evaluations in support of various DoDIG projects
  • Assists in designing and conducting technical inspections and evaluations that are independent and objective in highly technical areas
  • Participates in and/or leads inspections, audits, and evaluations
  • Collects and compiles data for completing analysis, tabulations, charts and graphs
  • Develops proposed findings and recommendations from inspections and evaluations
  • Provides DoDIG and employees with technical and professional assistance on engineering matters
  • Provides guidance on major weapons production engineering, system logistics and modification support, commodities and services, construction and architect engineer procurement and procurements by US or foreign governments
  • Prepares and presents reports for inspections, audits, and evaluations in writing and orally
  • Reviews systems and acquisition programs at various life cycle stages from technology development through production and deployment
  • Researches new government and industry engineering practices
  • Evaluates and provides comments on proposed audits, inspections, evaluations or studies

As a General Engineer GS-0801-14 your typical work assignments will include the following:
  • Serves as the technical authority for multiple disciplines of engineering related to design, manufacturing, testing, and quality of complex aerospace or defense systems
  • Designs and conducts independent and objective technical assessments, primarily involving complex aerospace and defense systems
  • Participates in inspections, audits, evaluations, and assessments on design, manufacturing, production testing, and quality of complex weapon systems
  • Participates in or leads technical assessments with emphasis on multiple disciplines of engineering
  • Assembles and compiles data for analysis, tabulation, charts, and graphs
  • Develops proposed findings and recommendations resulting from assessments on design, manufacturing, production testing, and quality of complex weapon systems
  • Prepares and presents reports of analyses and assessments on design, manufacturing, production testing, and quality of complex weapon systems
  • Maintains and expands knowledge of multiple engineering disciplines and related engineering analysis with respect to design, manufacturing, production testing, and quality of complex weapon systems

  • Position has been designated as Noncritical Sensitive. Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Incumbent is required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and is subject to random drug testing for the duration of service with Department of Defense (DoD OIG).
  • Organizational entities with the DoD are not required to conduct drug testing for DoD civilian employees moving by transfer or reassignment from one DoD Testing Designated Position (TDP) to another TDP with no break in service within the DoD, unless
  • The incumbent must adhere to the DoD Standards of Conduct.
  • If you have not previously successfully completed a probationary period with the federal government in a similar position, you will be required to serve a two-year probationary period.

Qualifications

You may qualify for the GS-13/14 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualifications requirements:

Specialized Experience: To meet the basic requirements, you must have at least 52 weeks of specialized experience at the GS-12 or equivalent level. Specialized experience is defined as: supporting, designing and conducting independent technical assessments involving multiple disciplines of engineering and assisting and/or leading technical assessments in various areas of engineering in audits, evaluations and investigations; collecting, assembling, compiling and analyzing data for presenting written and oral reports; and providing guidance on major weapons production engineering, system logistics services, system modification commodities and services, construction, and architect-engineer procurement by, from, or for foreign governments.

Specialized Experience: To meet basic requirements, you must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in the Federal Service. Work experience in more than one of the following engineering disciplines: Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical, Aerospace, Computer Science or Materials Engineering. Proven technical decision responsibility in one or more of the following: design, manufacturing, production test, and quality of aerospace or defense systems; such as radars, missiles, satellites, fire control, aircraft, ship construction systems. Experience demonstrates expert knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, techniques and practices to interpret and apply in the development of assessments and evaluations.


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Knowledge of and skill to apply innovative techniques to resolve advanced, complex technical and system problems
Knowledge of legislation and regulation for defense acquisition
