Summary

About the Position: This position is located within the Department of Pharmacy at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Fort Belvoir, VA. The incumbent will provide pharmaceutical services, which include review of drug therapies and consultations with other heath care professionals on the rational and appropriate use of medications, preparation and dispensing of medications.

Work involves considerable standing, walking, bending and stooping while providing health care assessments and treatments. Occasional lifting of items over 50 pounds may be required. Subject to physical attack from patients or distressed family members. The work is performed in a hospital where exposure to infection and contagious diseases is common. Exposure to radiation occurs during patient x-ray procedures and the dangers of micro voltage are present from electrical equipment. Frequent exposure to blood and body fluids occurs. Personnel protective equipment (PPE) will be worn during exposure to patient blood/body fluids and designated airborne pathogens.

Duties

Help
  • Serve on a variety of committees representing the pharmacy service.
  • Monitor the dispensing of all pharmaceuticals in the Medical Treatment Facility and allied facilities.
  • Respond to requests for drug information from health care providers and patients.
  • Use effective patient education techniques to provide counseling to patients and caregivers, including information on drug therapy, adverse effects, compliance, appropriate use, handling, and drug administration.
  • Review all patients prior to rounds and document a prospective therapeutic note in the patient's chart related to medication therapy and goals.
  • Perform renal and hepatic dosage adjustment; order labs that are pertinent to current medication therapy.
  • Complete pharmacokinetic consults, reporting adverse drug reactions and medication errors.
  • Document medication therapy notes in the patient's chart; provide bedside discharge counseling and document education provided in the patient chart.
  • Contact discharged patients to address any questions the patients have regarding their medication regimens.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Basic Requirement for Pharmacist:

Education:
A doctoral degree in Pharmacy that is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Licensure: Applicants must be licensed to practice pharmacy in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United
States.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirement listed below:

Experience: One year of professional pharmacy experience which includes preparing and dispensing medications; educating patients on proper medication use and dosage; reviewing and interpreting physicians' orders for appropriateness of medication; and assessing patients' medication profile for drug sensitivities, incompatibilities, allergies, and/or drug interactions.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Medical Requirement: Applicants must be able to distinguish basic colors.
