The incumbent serves as the Director for the Division of Hazard Analysis and is responsible for planning and leading a staff of statisticians in the application of statistical methods to characterize the numbers, types and trends in consumer product-related injuries and fatalities. Using data from consumers, health professionals, hospital emergency departments, medical examiners, death certificates and state and federal sources, staff produces statistics that are integral to identifying emerging trends, informing the agency's priorities and supporting enforcement and regulatory efforts.
The incumbent shall fulfill the planning and leadership responsibilities in the following specific ways:
Guide the development of survey and analysis protocols.
Evaluate the feasibility and technical merits of proposed study plans and conclusions.
Resolve technical and resource issues.
Ensure that all relevant data are interpreted, evaluated, organized and summarized in a statistically sound and timely manner.
Provide advice on statistical matters within CPSC and across public stakeholders. Prepare and justify budgets and account for performance.
Provide epidemiologic and statistical leadership to the Division staff including performance appraisals, professional development, and conflict resolution.
This is a Public Trust Position. Employment in this position requires a background investigation. Qualifications
In addition to the basic education requirements applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

Education
In addition to the specialized experience required, all applicants must also meet the following basic education requirements:
A bachelor's or higher degree which included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit is given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.
