As a/an CONSERVATION SPEC, GS-1001-9, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:
The incumbent designs and fabricates unique custom housing for long-term storage, transport, and/or exhibition of a wide assortment of unique archival records and artifacts of high intrinsic value. These housings are fabricated based on the condition, format, and access requirements of the item or items and may be fabricated by hand or with the assistance of a box making machine. The incumbent trains lower graded conservation technicians and other unit staff in the proper procedures for creating custom housings for archival documents and artifacts.
Serves as the team leader of all activities relating to efforts to fabricate custom archival housings and oversees the work of lower graded and/or same graded staff who are assigned to work on custom housings.
The incumbent implements approved conservation treatment, including dry cleaning, mold removal, disassembly and/or separation of sheets, humidification and flattening, disbinding, tape and adhesive removal, stain reduction, aqueous and non-aqueous deacidification, washing, mending, lining, and guarding.
You may qualify at the GS-09 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:
A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your ability to utilize knowledge to design and fabricate custom archival housings; utilize and train others on the use of computer software and hardware to operate box making machinery; perform as an effective and productive team member/ and use sound judgment and decision making to propose and perform conservation treatment on a variety of archival records.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
