    The Sciences and Exploration Directorate, Astrophysics Science Division, Astroparticle Physics Laboratory (Code 661) is seeking a scientist to carry out research related to the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, NASA's primary mission for gamma-ray astronomy, and to develop new technology and instrument concepts for future gamma-ray missions.

    Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected.     As a Research Astrophysicist, specializing in Fields and Particles, you will pursue research in developing new detector technology and instrument concepts with an emphasis on silicon and other semiconductor devices. You will perform analysis of data from NASA's Fermi satellite and provide research support to the Fermi project team for the scientific utilization of Fermi.

    You will analyze and interpret all-sky data collected by Fermi to determine the origin of regions of emission detected by Fermi; evaluate astrophysical models that could produce high-energy emission in the gamma-ray band; develop analysis methodology that enhances the scientific reach of the Fermi observatory. Additionally, you will work with the Fermi scientific community to optimize the science utilization of the mission. You will define and lead research projects, analyze and interpret data, and disseminate results through publication in technical reports, requirements documents or professional talks, invited talks and seminars, and presentations at scientific conferences. You will also consult, on request, with outside government, private, or international organizations to provide information, data, and design recommendations in field of study.

    You will design or direct the development of unique or leading-edge instrumentation and technology for gamma-ray astronomy missions, particularly in the area of semiconductor particle detectors; lead instrumentation development including design, fabrication and testing; lead the development of detector and instrument simulations using GEANT 4 and conduct analysis to determine scientific and technical performance of developed concepts; contribute to technical definition and design requirements, evaluate design requirements and limitations, and review instrument proposals for technical adequacy. Contribute to resolution of complex scientific and technical problems and assist where deficiencies are noted.

    You will generate ideas for new mission concepts to pursue progress in the field of astrophysics and lead or participate in development of proposals. Serve as a technical expert in planning, monitoring, and administering complex and innovative high energy astrophysics scientific projects, characterized by constantly, and sometimes greatly changing physical environment, critical problems, or other similar variables and unknowns. Acquire and coordinate funding and technical resources, and provide overall technical insight into the development and management of policies, procedures, and operational schedules necessary for new systems and functions.

    You will undertake scientific research in support of gamma-ray astrophysics mission concepts employing silicon detector and related devices, such as the All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory, including development of supporting detector technologies.
