This vacancy is for multiple Statistician Intern positions in the Associate Director for Decennial Census Programs (ADDC) area located at the U.S. Census Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. The Census Bureau is accessible from the Metro Rail, Green Line-Suitland Station.

A trial period may be required.

This Job Opportunity Announcement may be used to fill other Statistician Intern, GS-1599-4/7, positions within the Census Bureau in the same geographical location with the same qualifications and specialized experience.

This position will be filled under the Pathways Internship Program. This Program allows students to gain paid work experience while pursuing a degree, diploma or certificate at a qualifying institution. Under the Pathways Program, students who successfully complete all work, study, qualifications, and other eligibility requirements may be offered a permanent or term position with our agency upon graduation or completion of a qualifying certificate.

**This position is temporary and there is NO promotion potential beyond the grade that you are selected for during the entire time period you are employed under this announcement.**

** At the Agency's discretion, students hired under the Pathways Program may be non-competitively converted to a term, career, or career-conditional appointment with a possible Full Performance Level (FPL) of GS 5, GS 7, GS 9, GS 11, or GS 12 (FPL varies based on the hiring department).

Help

The individual selected for this position will perform the following duties at the GS-04 level:

  • Code a variety of technical documents according to established classification characteristics.
  • Edit reports for completeness and internal consistency and assures that information is within the scope of the assigned project.
  • Compile statistical tables from readily-identifiable sources, preparing in prescribed format and checking correctness according to prescribed procedures.
  • Recognize out-of-tolerance items, inconsistencies between items, data reporting errors, and data entry errors. Determines the appropriate resolution and takes action necessary to obtain statistical accuracy.
  • Contact respondents to collect data, and performs analysis of statistical data in relation to previously reported data, resolving questionable data responses.
  • Receive inquiries from respondents, assisting when possible and referring those that are atypical to higher grade technician or appropriate analyst.
The individual selected for this position will perform the following duties at the GS-07 level:
  • Apply statistical techniques and methods in performing project-related activities.
  • Assist in writing procedural instructions.
  • Assist in the preparation of documentation on procedures and problems encountered. Makes preliminary recommendations.

Qualifications

Basic Entry Requirements for GS-07:

Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

Minimum Education Requirements:

GS-04: Successfully completed 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associates degree, at least 60 credit (90 quarter hours).

In addition to meeting the Basic Entry Requirements, applicants must have the following education requirement:

GS-07: Sucessfully completed 1 full academic year of graduate level education, at least 18 credits (27 quarter hours),

or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.

S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society

1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.

2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:

a. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum;

or

b. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.
