The USDA, ARS, National Animal Disease Center, Virus and Prion Research Unit in Ames, Iowa is seeking a Student Trainee (Office Automation/Clerk) to assist professional and technical staff by performing miscellaneous office automation/clerical duties in support of the work of the office.
This is a Pathways Internship position with a not-to-exceed date of 1 year, and may be extended in 1 year increments for up to 8 years in total, as long as the student remains eligible for the program.
This positon will be filled at the GS-01, GS-02, or GS-03 grade level. While in the Intership Program, there is no promotion potential beyond the grade level for which you were selected.
Upon successful completion of the Internship Program, students MAY be non-competitively converted to a term or permanent position; however, conversion eligibility is not an entitlement of the Pathways Intership Program.
This internship position may be converted to a competitive service appointment with a higher career ladder.
Internships are open to individuals who have been accepted for enrollment or who are enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) from a qualifying educational institution on a full or halftime basis.
The hours scheduled per week may vary depending upon the student trainee’s class schedule.

Typical, but not all-inclusive, duties include any combination of the following:
* Performing miscellaneous clerical duties such as receiving, reviewing, and verifying documents; maintaining office records; locating information from files; answering and referring telephone calls; filing material; opening and distributing mail; copying materials; and performing similar support work in the assigned organization.
* Using office automation equipment and software to type, edit, and create a variety of standard documents in accordance with established procedures. Documents may include some scientific/administrative terminology and/or statistical data. Typing final, error-free documents, ensuring correct punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and grammar.
* Maintaining and purging office files, directives, and reference materials. May also be responsible for indexing files.
* Receiving incoming telephone calls and visitors and referring them to appropriate staff members. Providing routine information relating to clerical and administrative functions and programs of the office.
* Receiving, reviewing, and routing incoming mail to office staff.
* Serving as alternative/backup timekeeper, preparing, and transmitting Time and Attendance records for office staff.
* Sending, receiving, and distributing electronic mail and telephone FAX documents. Operating office photocopiers.
* Preparing and typing travel authorizations, vouchers, and other standard office forms. Filling in for office secretary or other clerical employees during periods of absence. May maintain office bulletin boards, ensuring material is current and posted.
Students must be at least 16 years of age and meet Federal, State, and Local laws governing the employment of minors.

Qualification Requirements
