Physical Demands: Work is carried out in both an office and field environment. Due to the area covered, the job requires frequent travel for extended periods of time and requires work on the weekends. Field work requires working in varying topography and climatic conditions that include stockyards, state fairgrounds and city arenas. Inspection trips and satellite operations will involve travel by airplane, car, SUV, and light, medium or heavy trucks. Lifting of corral panels weighing in excess of 105 pounds and handling of wild horses and burros for examination will be required. Office work and public contact work will be mentally demanding.
Work Environment: The office work is standard office atmosphere located in the downtown area of a large city and can be mentally demanding. Outside assignments involve widely varying topographic and climatic conditions. Work within stockyards and fairgrounds involve long days lasting between 10-12 hours and in dusty, dry, and less than sanitary conditions.

These positions are located in the Northeastern States District Office in Milwaukee, WI in their Division of Natural Resources. The positions are under the supervision of the Supervisory Wild Horse and Burro Specialist (WH&B). The incumbent’s program and activities are carried out in a widely diverse geographical area of the Northeastern States District Office which encompasses 20 northeastern, Midwestern and Lake States.
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Coordinates with other WH&B Facilities throughout the country, as well as the State and National WH&B Program offices, and employees across the Bureau for the purpose of coordinating the receiving or sending of shipments of wild horses and burros based on the required number of animals needed for the satellite adoption events and or Eastern States short-term holding facility. Ensures coordination concerning the negotiations with trucking firms in making necessary arrangements for the shipping of animals into or out of the short-term holding facility and post satellite adoption events.
Ensures that all necessary maintenance of physical facilities is performed to ensure proper animal care for WH&Bs held at the adoption events and holding facility. Ensures corrals and buildings are maintained and in good working condition for the safety of staff, public and wild horses.
Responsible for all aspects of the Wild Horse and Burro Program satellite adoption events as assigned. Responsibility includes selecting satellite locations (stockyards, fairgrounds and equestrian facilities), execution of facility use agreements, adopter screening, conducting satellites and working with state veterinarians relative to livestock health issues. Assists with the pre-adoption publicity and marketing of WH&Bs.
Responsible for maintaining cooperative relationships with volunteers, user groups, government officials, professional interest groups, and animal rights, humane, and animal control organizations. Provides technical resource information as needed to meet public, professional and governmental group needs. Addresses controversial issues with tact and diplomacy. Works with livestock inspectors and investigators, inspecting horses and burros for freeze marks, exploring violations of the Wild Horse and Burro Act; and providing testimony on age, condition, care, etc., at trials and hearings.
You must possess a valid Class A CDL or meet this requirement within 6 months of accepting this position.
