This position is located in the System Architecture and Product Assurance Staff (SAPA), Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO), Smithsonian Institution (SI). SAPA develops and maintains the foundation system architecture, which describes how information systems co-exist at the Smithsonian and how they support SI administrative and program functions; develops information technology policies and procedures, including technical standards and guidelines.
This position creates, configures, migrates, deploys, and maintains websites using Drupal and WordPress platforms. Provides website configuration, hosting, testing, and deployment support for a large enterprise with over 5,500 staff and over 200 websites.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge in web, mobile, and social media technology and practices, including the technological, business, user experience, aesthetic, and content-related aspects of web production; Maintains up-to-date technical expertise in Open Source web architectures with a strong focus on large enterprise, high-availability LAMP infrastructures running multiple Drupal, WordPress, PHP, and HTML5 websites using Varnish, Memecache and other caching technologies.Applies web development techniques for Drupal and Word Press platforms. This includes requirements gathering and creating information architectures, user interface design, wire-framing, module implementation, testing, application deployment, and maintenance.

- Performs database migrations, query creation and integration of websites with other systems through API / web service interactions, and XML / JSON creation / consumption. Migrates websites / web applications and corresponding data / databases and content from older to newer platforms, including cross-platform migrations, upgrade-migrations from older to newer versions of Drupal and WordPress, and migration of sites from external hosting providers to the Smithsonian’s hosting infrastructure.
- Maintains up-to-date technical expertise in Open Source web architectures with a strong focus on large enterprise, high-availability LAMP infrastructures running multiple Drupal, WordPress, PHP, and HTML5 websites using Varnish, Memecache and other caching technologies; Maintains day-to-day familiarity with collections, research, publishing, exhibition, education, and public programs throughout the Institution and how metadata and related digital surrogates are made available to Institutional web and mobile applications.
