Summary

This position is located in the Department of Maintenance and Repair, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Kings Point, New York. Midshipmen in residence at the Academy number approximately 1000. The physical plant of the academy consists of 82 acres of grounds, 42 buildings (over 700,000 square feet of floor space) consisting of administration buildings, officer's residences, a library, classrooms, a chapel, Midshipmen residence buildings, athletic fields and grandstand, parking areas, piers, floats and gangways, a considerable number of sailing and power craft, a garage with 22 motor vehicles of all types, a steam generating plant, various shops used for maintenance repair and fabrication of parts and units, such features as lawns, shrubs, hedges, flower beds, a greenhouse and swimming pools. In addition, the Academy provides administrative space for numerous tenant operations from other government agencies.

This position is ideal for a highly motived, experienced maintenance mechanic in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related fixtures and utilities using a variety of trade practices such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, and electrical work and other related trades.

Help

The Maintenance Mechanic:

  • Works alone or as part of a team. Troubleshoots equipment to determine the area of difficulty; what parts or material are required; methods, techniques, and procedures to use in completing repairs. Plans his/her work.
  • Must have the skill to identify and repair the full range of problems that may occur within the grounds of the Academy.
  • Provides a full-time preventative maintenance program, and is responsible for most repairs that can be accomplished.
  • Must be able to read and layout work from blueprints, sketches, schematics, technical manuals, drawings and specifications and other materials to determine the characteristics and repair of the equipment.
  • Must have the skill to identify and repair the full range of problems that may occur within the grounds of the Academy. Must be skilled in the use of all hand and power tools and equipment common to the trades.
  • Troubleshoots equipment to determine the area of difficulty; what parts or material are requires; and the methods, techniques, and procedures to use in completing repairs.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • MEDICAL EXAM: Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.
  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: Successful completion of a pre-employment background investigation is required.
  • WORK SHIFTS: This position requires working on various shifts (day and night) including Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays as necessary.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to handle objects weighing 20 kilograms (45) pounds and occasionally carry objects weighing 223 kilograms (50) pounds or more over considerable distances.
  • DRIVER'S LICENSE: Must possess a current and valid state operator’s motor vehicle license and an acceptable driving record.
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position are based on the training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.

For the Wage Grade 10, to qualify, your experience should include experience equal or equivalent to the following:

  • Applicants must have journey level proficiency in at least two of the mechanical, electrical, carpentry, and plumbing trades.
