Help

This position is part of the NASA Pathways Intern Program which is a formal training program. You may be
required to perform rotational assignments in various organizations.

This position requires working under the mentorship/supervision of senior researchers on problems relating to the prediction and control of aircraft noise - including advanced configurations and Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS). The scope of the work can range from mechanical design and research (experimental and/or analytical and/or computational) into the fundamental physics of aerodynamic noise generation to prediction of the total noise generated by an aircraft in flight and design and development of noise control technologies. Experimental work can involve designing hardware for experiments in various aeroacoustic test facilities.

GS-7: Accepted into a master's or juris doctor program OR in the first year of a master's or juris doctor program. Starting salary: $46,609.00

GS-9: Completed one academic year of a master's or juris doctor program OR accepted into a doctorate program OR in the first year of a doctorate program. starting salary: $57,015.00

GS-11: Accepted into a doctorate program OR in the first year of a doctorate program in an accredited Engineering or Science degree program as specified in the selective placement factor in the Educational Qualifications section. Starting salary: $61,218.00

GS-12: Completion of one year of doctorate-level study in an accredited Engineering or Science degree program as specified in the selective placement factor in the Educational Qualifications section. Starting salary: $73,375.00

Education

This position has a Selective Placement Factor (screen-out) which will also be used to determine minimum qualifications for this position. Applicants not possessing this Selective Placement Factor will be found ineligible for this position. The Selective Placement Factor is Currently enrolled in or accepted for enrollment in a Master's or Ph.D. in Acoustics, Aerospace Engineering, or Mechanical Engineer.

To be eligible for this position, you must be pursuing a degree in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science at an accredited educational institution.

Degrees in engineering technology are not qualifying for this position.

Engineering degrees must be from a college or university school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. To find out if a degree meets this requirement, go to .

Additional information

Interns may be promoted to higher grades based on the amount of education completed and acceptable performance. However, promotions are not guaranteed.

You will serve a trial period for the duration of the Intern appointment.

Interns may be considered for conversion to a term or permanent appointment within 120 days of completing degree requirements provided they: Successfully completed an academic course of study with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.9 (on a 4.0 scale); Complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience before completing degree requirements; Meet the qualification requirements for the position to which they are converted; and Maintain acceptable performance.

Eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that NASA will offer conversion.

At NASA, term appointments last from one to six years. If an Intern is converted to a term appointment, they may later be converted to a permanent appointment without competing.

The Intern may be converted to a Research Aerospace Engineer (AST) with promotion potential to the GS-13 level.

As a condition of employment, male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must certify that they have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law.
