This position is located at one of the various Indian Health Service Hospital or Clinics under the Navajo Area Office. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a first line dentist. Assist the Chief and Service Unit Dental Program in the implementation and operation of the dental program that includes emergency, preventive, restorative, rehabilitative, and community services in a highly complex and diverse setting to American Indians and other Native Americans.Learn more about this agency
- Completes preliminary examinations on new dental service patients; review's patient's medical and dental history; examines the teeth and periodontium for evidence of plaque and periodontal disease and has the findings charted in the dental record.
- Performs a full range of professional dental duties in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental disease or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures, including Operative Dentistry, Oral Diagnosis, Periodontics, Oral Surgery, Pedodontics, Endodontics, Fixed and/or Removable Prosthodontics, Orthodontics Oral Medicine, Geriatric Dentristry, and Dental Prevention.
- Prepares treatment plans for patients including assessment of problem, type of oral hygiene care required, nutrition assessment and counseling, restorative and rehabilitative care possible with available resources.
- Present lectures and demonstration in oral health care to various patient and community groups such as diabetics, hemodialysis patients, drug or alcohol dependent patients, and health boards. May instruct nurse, health educators, social workers, nursing assistants, community health representatives, other medical staff, and school teachers in proper techniques of oral hygiene to a variety of patients.
- Provides technical and clinical guidance and direction to all Basic Clinical Dentist and Dental Assistants.

Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Applicants must have passed the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

GS-11: Applicants who meet the above basic requirements qualify for the GS-11 grade level.
GS-12: In addition to the above Basic Requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) level, applicants must complete a 2-year residency program in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science; -OR- equivalent experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, and/or training.
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: The evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area. Examples of dentistry experience may include the removal of decay; filling cavities; straightening, extracting, and repairing teeth; treating gum diseases; performing corrective surgery; making measurements/models for dentures to replace missing teeth, administering anesthetics.
The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.
