Help

As an ARCHIVES TECHNICIAN, GS-1421-4/5, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:

  • Pick up and delivers records from/to Federal agencies located in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Acts as a first line liaison between customers and AFO for reference service programs. Serve as a source for customer feedback to the AFO management team. Ensure that customers receive requested records within 24 hours of request.
  • Work with customers to resolve problems for requests with negative search results or other problems delaying delivery; may tutor or coach customer agency personnel regarding proper submission procedures. Inform customers of daily delivery schedule delays or fluctuations or to receive emergency requests from customers.
  • Perform or oversee the performance of various duties related to searching, retrieving, re-filing, shelving, removing, or screening Federal records and preparing them for delivery to customers. Perform audits on "second requests," negatives and other unusual request, re-file, and interfile actions.
  • Provide assistance/ instruction in AFO procedures, methods, and terminology related to records being pulled or prepared for delivery to customer agencies. May serve as a team leader for 3 to 5 lower graded archives aids and technicians performing routine or special transfer, disposal, reference, re-file; relocation and screening activities.

Qualifications by Closing Date: You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Please note that qualifications will be subject to verification.

The first part of the interview process for this position requires candidates to pass a physical ability test designed to measure the candidate's ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. The test requires carrying 50-pound boxes like those found on the job. It also requires bending, squatting, and walking to reach the boxes, in addition to climbing and balancing on a pulpit ladder up to 14 feet high. The weight capacity of the ladders is rated at 300 pounds.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:
You must be physically able to perform the duties of this position which include lifting boxes weighing up to 50 pounds, climbing caster-equipped ladders, and transporting records on manually operated moving equipment. The work also requires considerable standing, walking, stooping, and bending when delivering records to agencies or when picking up re-files. Work is performed within the Records Center and other Federal buildings (including areas not air-conditioned during summer months or heated during winter months), on uncovered loading docks, in a delivery van, and on a variety of road surfaces in cities and on highways in all types of weather conditions. You will be required to have a valid driver's license and drive a government van.

Qualifications

GS-04: Candidates must have had one (1) year of general experience. General Experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work which shows that you have the ability to obtain the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. Examples of general experience for this grade include: performing customer service for records requests and delivery.

Education may be substituted for experience, GS-4: Successful completion of two years of education above the high school level, OR an associate degree from an accredited institution.

Combination of Experience and Education: You may use a combination of your post-high school education from an accredited educational institution and experience to meet the total experience requirements of the GS-4 level.

GS-05: Candidates must have had one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4). Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies to perform successfully the duties of the position as described above, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience for this grade level include: performing various duties related to searching, retrieving, refiling, shelving, interfiling, and screening Federal records and preparing them for delivery to customer agencies.

Education may be substituted for experience, GS-5: four years of college education from an accredited educational institution leading to a bachelor's degree or 120 hours of progressively higher level college education from an accredited educational institution. If qualifying based on education, transcripts must be provided.

Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of qualifying education and experience may be used to meet the total requirements of this position.
