This position will be located in Nogales, AZ. To be eligible for this position, you MUST be able to attend school AND physically report to your duty station in Nogales on a full or part time (at least 16 hours a week) schedule year round in order to carry out work assignments. Remote locations or telework schedules are not available. Housing and travel expenses WILL NOT be paid.
Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent job in the civil service. The target position upon graduation would be to a qualifying position as a GS-0404 Biological Science Lab Technician.

The duties described are for the GS-5. At the GS-3 and GS-4 grade level(s), assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity. The duties may include, but are not limited to:
Assisting technicians and officers with inspection and survey activities.
Applying laws, regulations, and policies related to plant protection and quarantine activities.
Using data collection tools to accurately document and report information collected.
Utilizing resources to identify plant diseases, insects, noxious weeds, or other plant pests.
Communicating orally and in writing to respond to inquiries and provide information to employees and customers.
Specific duties will vary by program and duty station.
Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959

This Internship confers eligibility for a noncompetitive conversion to a permanent or term position in the competitive service contingent upon meeting all applicable Internship Program requirements and the needs of the agency. You will be considered for conversion to a permanent or term position upon the successful completion of your Internship. However, please note that eligibility for conversion does not guarantee the agency will opt for conversion.
Qualifications
ELIGIBILITY : Students who are currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program.
IN ADDITION to meeting eligibility requirements, you MUST meet the below qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Applicants can qualify by meeting the EDUCATION requirements specified below.
EDUCATION: GS-3: Completion of 1 full academic year of post-high school study.
An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as a minimum of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours at an accredited college or university; OR
A minimum of 36 weeks at an accredited business, technical, vocational, or qualifying educational institution for at least 20 classroom hours per week.
GS-4: Completion of 2 full academic years (60 semester or 90 quarter hours) of post-high school study or an associate's degree.
Desired fields of study include but are not limited to entomology, plant pathology, botany, or agriculture.
To be eligible for conversion to a position after graduation, applicants need to graduate with a degree in that includes at least 16 semester hours in courses such as biology, plant pathology, entomology, zoology, botany, forestry, chemistry, agriculture, or physics.
IF YOU ARE IN YOUR LAST SEMESTER/QUARTER of completing your degree/certificate requirements, you must show proof of acceptance to a continuing degree/certificate program. This may be documented by an acceptance letter for future enrollment in a degree/certificate program.
