Help

The Supervisory Police Officer is one level below the Police Captain and actively participates in all police functions and supervisory functions. This responsibility includes the daily supervision and enforcement of federal, state, and local laws pertaining to the physical protection of patients, visitors, employees; protection of the United States Government and personal property within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs Medical Center; and the protection of civil rights for all personnel on federally-owned property. The Supervisory Police Officer is responsible for the supervision of three to five Police Officers; ensuring that work is distributed fairly among his or her subordinates with adherence to station policy, police procedures and security directives. In addition, responsible for the investigation, detention and apprehension of individuals suspected or convicted of offenses against the criminal laws of the United States and the Rules and Regulations Governing Security; Law Enforcement, and Standards of Conduct on Veteran Affairs Property. The duties of the position include but are not limited to:
· Planning and coordinating daily duty schedules.
· Preparing midterm/annual performance appraisals.
· Conducting equipment inventories during shift change.
· Determining the need for and conducting searches to collect and secure contraband

OTHER KEY REQUIREMENTS:
1. As a "Condition of Employment!" the Supervisory Police Officer must be able to be issued a firearm and then qualify semi-annually with his or her assigned duty weapon, annually with his or her assigned Baton and maintain a valid State Driver's License. Police Officers must meet the standards as outlined in the Lautenberg Amendment (PL 104-208) to the Fun Control Act of 1968 (18 use 922). Persons who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot own, be issued, purchase or otherwise have possession of a handgun.
2. Maintain a high state of physical condition and appearance when wearing the police uniform in accordance with established policy and must ensure that his/her subordinates do the same.

Physical Requirements: Placement in this position is subject to meeting the physical requirements of the position. The Supervisory Police Officer must undergo and pass an annual physical and psychiatric evaluation in accordance with VA Handbook 0730.
· The duties of this position are exacting and responsible, involve activities under trying conditions and must possess emotional and mental stability.
· Routine patrol requires regular and recurring physical exertion, long hours of standing, walking, bending, stooping, driving and similar activities.
· Responds to alarms, pursues suspects, participates and conducts training activities, climbs stairs, and walks during assigned foot patrols in and around large buildings.
· Agility, dexterity and strength are needed to pursue, apprehend and detain uncooperative suspects.
· On a regular and recurring basis the work requires strenuous exertion physically restraining disorderly individuals to prevent harm to others, fellow officers and the individual.
· Police work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
· May work prolonged hours, especially during inclement weather or during a disaster situation.
· Maintain a high standard of physical fitness and hand/eye coordination in order to maintain semi-annual qualification with his or her assigned agency firearm and annual qualification with his or her assigned intermediate weapons and required Defensive Tactics Techniques.

Security Clearance Requirements: This position is a public trust position and requires an extensive background investigation.

This position is a testing designated position for drug testing: Any individual in Veteran Affairs who has tentatively been identified for placement in a testing designated position and who has not, immediately prior to the placement, been subject to random testing is subject to being drug tested if selected.

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06 level.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience (GS-07 level):
To qualify for this position at the GS-07: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-06) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is work that has been performed under general supervision and includes distributing and balancing the workload among employees in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, assuring timely accomplishment of assigned duties, assuring that Police Officers conduct aggressive patrol activities and community policing duties when not busy responding to routine or emergency calls. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: making arrests or apprehensions when necessary; reviewing police reports for accuracy and completeness; conducting patrol briefings and equipment inventories; making post assignments; conducting crime scene assessments; conducting initial investigations and enforcing federal, state and local laws.

Note: Experience as a prison or jail guard, correctional officer, night watchman, or other position that did not provide knowledge and skills in general law enforcement methods and techniques that could not be applied in the performance of police officer functions will not be considered as acceptable specialized experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

No substitution of education or training may be made for the required specialized experience for the GS-07 level.
