What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This is a temporary excepted service position not-to-exceed 12 months, for which all qualified applicants, with or without Federal status, may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service. Employment may not exceed 180 working days in a service year.

The full performance level of this position will be set at the grade level at which you are selected.

Salary GG-04: $14.30 (Step 01) to $18.59 (Step 10);
Salary GG-05: $16.00 (Step 01) to $20.80 (Step 10)

NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Help

As a BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN (FIELD ASSISTANT) within the USGS NORTHERN PRAIRIE WILDLIFE RESEARCH CENTER, some of your specific duties will include:

GG-04:

  • Collects vegetation composition and structure data in a field environment.
  • Follows established protocols for recording and maintaining data on paper data sheets.
  • Follows established protocols for entering data into an established database.
  • Operates a government motor vehicle or a boat as an incidental driver.
GG-05:
  • Those duties listed above; and
  • Tracks task completion, checks and corrects database.
Physical Demands: Field work will be strenuous at times. Position demands hiking moderate to long distances (1-8 miles per day) in varying temperatures, carrying equipment, and lifting objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Field work is extensive and may require long hours of bending, squatting, and/or kneeling; extensive exposure to sun and insects and potential exposure to bison, and rattle snakes; and walking over rough terrain in grasslands. Most office work (data management and computer use) is performed while seated, although occasional periods of standing, walking, bending, or carrying light objects are required.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
  • A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
  • Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possession of a valid State driver's license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State License and a copy of your driving record.

Qualifications

In order to qualify at the GG-04 level, you must meet one of the following:

Six (6) months of field party experience. Field party experience includes activities associated with making and recording geologic, hydrologic, or topographic field observations; collecting geologic, biological, or water samples for laboratory analysis; applying accepted data collection techniques and methods in the performance of field work in support of scientific investigations; and using a variety of surveying instruments and electronic or mechanical instrumentation in the making and recording of field measurments and observations designed to collect data for geologic physical science investigations. Only time actually spend in the field can be credited when qualifying individuals under the field party experience option.

OR

Two (2) years of sub-professional experience. Sub-professional experience is defined as technical work performed in support of field or laboratory investigations relating to the biological sciences, physical sciences, or closely related disciplines, which provided basic knowledge or skills in gathering, recording, and assembling scientific or engineering data; using scientific instruments to measure angles, degrees weights, strengths, intensities, etc.; setting up and operating test apparatus, and manipulating quantitative data. Experience may include assisting professional employees in such duties as calibrating and operating measuring instruments, mixing solutions, making chemical analyses, setting up and operating test apparatus, and compiling and processing scientific data. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as experience when the work was performed in close association with physical or biological scientists or other technical personnel and provided a good working knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, and techniques.

OR

One (1) year of college work related to field of employement.



In order to qualify at the GG-05 level, you must meet one of the following:

Nine (9) months of field party experience. OR

Three (3) years of sub-professional experience. Three (3) years college study related to field of employment (equivalent to 90 semester/135 quarter hours) plus 3 months of laboratory or field work experience. Satisfactory completion of a field course of stufy may be substituted for the 3 months of field and/or laboratory experience.
