Help

The Physical Security Specialist performs a wide range of physical security and police duties for the Boise Veterans Medical Center and Associated Community Based Outpatient Clinics. Duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Managing the stations Physical security program from within Police Service.
  • Representing the department/facility at various meetings, conferences, and events.
  • Acting as the Engineering Service and Contracting Officer's representative for the Police Service.
  • Responsibility for the daily operation and technically correct functionality of all assigned security alarm databases, security video record and video archive servers.
  • Ensuring that all servers and connected alarm control panels, and all related facility access/video and alarm hardware devices undergo a regular weekly performance inspection.
  • Performing preventative maintenance wherever necessary by installing, replacing, updating, and performing repairs as needed to the devices and/or individual components.
  • Possessing arrest and apprehension authority as well as maintain the requirement to carry and agency approved firearm in the performance of duties.

Work schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary. There may be some walking, standing, bending and carrying light items and may involve travel to other locations. When involved in law enforcement duties, The work requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, driving, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and other similar activities. Incumbent engages in such exertions when pursuing suspects, or participating in weapons or other kinds of training activities, climbing stairs in office buildings or walking foot patrols in and around large buildings. May regularly require lifting and carrying heavy objects of 50 pounds or less. May require common physical
characteristics and abilities in agility and dexterity and the strength to pursue, apprehend, and detain uncooperative suspects.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/02/2018.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: GS-7: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.

You may qualify based on your experience as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: GS-7 Qualifications require: at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-5. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has provided you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a GS-7 Program Support Assistant. The GS-7 will perform the same duties as the GS-9 only they will perform them with supervision and guidance.

    GS-9 Qualifications require: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level. Examples of specialized experience may include but are not limited to: Independently serving as the leading technical expert and is responsible for the development and administration of physical security activities for all facilities under the control of the Boise VA Medical Center; conducting physical security inspections, surveys and studies designed to improve the protection of patient, employees, visitors and assets while on VA controlled property; recommends enhancements to existing physical security systems based on changing threats and new technologies; develops department and facility instructions, procedures, and policies related to physical security, vulnerability and force protection; performing as a Lead Police Officer performing police, security, and investigative duties and responsibilities in the medical facility; Acting as one of Police Services contracting officers for the facility.(This experience must be well documented in your resume or application package.).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Education

There is no educational substitution at this grade level.
