Summary

This position is that of a Staff Physician primarily assigned to the Directorate for Medical Services (DMS), Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD). The selectee is responsible for the practice of internal medicine and will be assigned to the General Internal Medicine Clinic as an Internal Medicine provider with the majority of beneficiaries being complicated geriatric patients. The selectee will interface with and teach interns and residents, medical students, and physician assistants.

Duties

Help

The successful selectee will perform the following duties:

  • Coordinate necessary and appropriate medical and social services for beneficiaries in an outpatient and inpatient setting.
  • Perform/document patient history and physical examination; order and interpret appropriate diagnostic studies; prescribe medications and therapies, and perform patient education; promote preventive and health maintenance care, including periodic physicals; stress positive health behaviors and self-care through education.
  • Conduct peer review and participate in performance improvement activities in accordance with established Command policies.
  • Work collaboratively within a team of professionals to provide quality care and support services to patients and staff.
  • Refer patients to medical specialists or other practitioners when necessary.
  • Provide medical consultative services and chart review for quality assurance purposes.
  • Admit patients to general Internal Medicine Wards, Intensive Care Units, Emergency Department and specialty diagnostic areas; attend conferences, meetings, and training to maintain currency in internal medicine and primary care provision; maintain currency on all Command required training.
  • Respond as needed to in-house emergencies.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:

  • DEGREE: MD or DO from an accredited school in the United States or Canada. Is your degree from a foreign medical school? If yes, then you must have a permanent ECFMG or Fifth Pathway Certificate. Please make sure your application includes your ECFMG or 5th Pathway Certificate number including date awarded.
  • RESIDENCY: 5 years of residency training or equivalent experience and training in Internal Medicine (i.e., 3 yrs. Residency & 2 yr. fellowship and/or experience). Your resume must reflect that you have a sufficient level of expertise in Internal Medicine to perform the core privileges of this position at the GP-15 Level.
  • LICENSURE: Current, active, permanent, full, and unrestricted physician license to practice medicine in any state, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • COMPETENCY: Completion of 50-hours of continuing medical education activities per two years, with a minimum of 20 categor-1 hours or in accordance with current state licensure. Demonstrates skill to correctly interpret diagnostic laboratory results and perform preliminary interpretation of electrocardiograms and radiographs.

Satisfy BUMED's clinical privileging requirements which, in addition to the above, includes the following:
  • Completion of an Internal Medicine residency approved by the American specialty board or AOA, board certification, or board eligible.
  • Current clinical competence (e.g., privileged to independently practice as an Internal Medicine Physician within the past 2 years, actively practiced within the past 2 years by having encountered a sufficient number of clinical cases to represent a broad spectrum of the privileges required).
  • No health status contraindications to granting clinical privileges.
  • Board Certification is not required, but desired.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: This position has a Selective Placement Factor (SPF). The actual SPF is do you have current Basic Life Support (BLS). Failure to possess this factor WILL result in an ineligible rating. Possession of this factor must be verifiable via resume AND the occupational questionnaire.
