Summary

This position is located in Economic Research Service (ERS) in the Office of the Director of the Resource and Rural Economics Division (RRED), in Washington, DC.

The Economic Research Service (ERS) conducts broad programs of economic and other social science research and analysis relating to agriculture, food, natural resources and rural America for use by public and private decision makers. ERS' clients are the executive and legislative branches; environmental, consumer and public interest groups, including farm and industry groups; and the general public.

The purpose of this position is to serve as the Assistant Outreach Editor in the Office of the Director of the Resource and Rural Economics Division (RRED). The incumbent must be a forward-looking person who is primarily responsible for managing the Division’s outreach publications. These responsibilities include formulating, planning and executing a variety of outputs to successfully disseminate original research, including outputs such as ERS’ Amber Waves magazine, Charts of Note, webinars, infographics, long-form content, and other emerging media strategies and products for communicating research findings to a nontechnical audience.

Duties

Help

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

Coordinates the Division’s outreach publications by providing economic and other social science information and analysis to inform public and private decisions regarding agriculture, food, natural resources, and rural America. 

Serves as economics editor for Amber Waves, Charts of Notes, and related web content; provides content, guidance and oversight in the translation of technical economic information.

Exercises considerable judgment in proposing the most appropriate
topics, outlet and format for communicating to users emerging issues affecting the agricultural, resource, and rural sectors.

Translates complex economic information into a format and style suitable for understanding by an informed, but non-technical, audience.

Plans and writes articles in a format and style suitable for an informed but non-technical audience.

Develops data visualizations based on agency data resources and statistical analyses. Products will include dynamic and interactive charts and maps, as well as infographics and other multi-media products.

Ensures that publications are planned, completed and reviewed in a timely manner.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified by grade level.

In order to be found minimally qualified, you must meet both the following education requirement AND the specialized experience requirement.  


Basic Requirements

A.
Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience:

GS-13: Qualifying experience for the GS-13 level includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is developing and disseminating through written and web based outlets, quantitative economic analysis and statistics on topics relevant to public and private decision makers while ensuring its complex nature is understandable by key audiences.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
