Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. A review may be required to determine the appropriate grade level of the position and supplemental materials may be required from the selectee. As a Research Astrophysicist, specializing in Fields and Particles, you will pursue research in modeling of the observatory response including instrument noise sources, polarization effects, and time-domain interferometry, as well as develop waveform models of the various expected signals as possible, and collaborate with others pursuing similar research.

Conceive and develop new and innovative models, theoretical concepts, techniques, instruments or investigations that are significant to the success of the gravitational astrophysics program. Is regularly sought out as an expert in gravitational wave analysis and instrument modeling by other researchers and scientists and provides expert technical advice and counsel.

Isolate and define critical problems, conditions or issues and resolve novel, obscure or highly controversial problems that have impact on the research area, Goddard/NASA programs and stakeholders. Design simulation or optimization models that contribute to interdisciplinary research efforts and studies and that advance the state-of-the-art in gravitational astrophysics relative to the study of gravitational waves. Organize, lead, and act as a major contributor in collaborations.

You will be a participant in international and national efforts to design, build and operate a space-based gravitational wave observatory.

You will fulfill a leading role in, and making major contributions to the conception, design, formulation, development, technology maturation, launch and operation of a future GW mission

Contribute to the development of data analysis algorithms and demonstrations of science performance, including, but not limited to coordinating and leading US participation in activities such as mock LISA Data Challenges (MLDC). These community-wide data analysis activities will require not only research and participation by various groups with different and perhaps both competing and complementary techniques and will be essential at demonstrating not only that the LISA project can extract the signals needed to return the science expected from the mission, but also that the we are getting the best performance from the instrument as built.

Conceive and design techniques, methods, approaches to data analysis and instrument modeling in response to agency needs for data in the area of gravitational astrophysics that lead to modification of existing theories or technology. The researcher is sought out by colleagues who are equally accomplished in their respective fields. Serve on important committee assignments of professional groups.

Publish original research related to the science and technology of data analysis and instrument modeling relative to gravitational astrophysics phenomena. Present original research at local and national scientific conferences and workshops.

Provide technical guidance and support for other scientists and engineers working on the LISA mission.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for the GS-13 grade level, applicants must have one year specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GS-12) defined as studying the nature and effects of magnetic, gravitational and electric fields, and energetic particles in space environments; performing modeling and data analysis for extracting gravitational wave signals from the output of a gravitational wave observatory; assisting in the development of new concepts, techniques, materials or products which have a significant impact on gravitational astrophysics science or technology.

To qualify for the GS-14 grade level, applicants must have one year specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GS-13) defined as studying the nature and effects of magnetic, gravitational and electric fields, and energetic particles in space environments; performing modeling and data analysis for extracting gravitational wave signals from the output of a gravitational wave observatory; developing new concepts, techniques, materials or products which have a significant impact on gravitational astrophysics science or technology.

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
