This position is with the Directorate of Emergency Services located at Aberdeen Proving Ground MD.

As a Security Guard you will perform duties in accordance with appropriate regulations to detect and prevent theft, damage, accident, trespass, sabotage and espionage and to enforce the security regulations of the installation. You will control access of vehicles and pedestrians on the installation, verifying identification through use of identification cards, badges, automated records, vehicle decals, verbal questioning, and other means, allowing entrance to persons and vehicles with authorization. As the installations initial point of contact, you will answers brief visitor questions, and determine whether appropriate authorization for access exists, and provides assistance. Record visitor information and purpose of visit, as necessary; and may issue daily passes or refer visitors to another location to obtain special passes. The incumbent admits persons, denies entry or arranges for escorts, as appropriate. As required by instructions or force protection level, you will conduct vehicle searches/inspections (to include cargo areas, engine compartments and undercarriages), in accordance with standing operating procedures. Inspects containers, personal property, and documents on private, commercial and governmental vehicles, and exercises tact, courtesy, and firmness in the performance of all force protection duties. You will be authorized to confiscate unauthorized or otherwise controlled items, and to detain those suspected of criminal or other illegal activity, as well as, question suspicious persons and warn or detain violators of laws, regulations, policies, rules or posted warnings. You will be required to make instantaneous decisions regarding use of deadly force, the Active Vehicle Barrier, and alerting appropriate officials of apparent security violations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, driving, riding, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, or carrying items weighing up to 45-50 pounds in response to emergency situations. On occasion, the incumbent may be required to lift objects over 50 pounds, or to climb ropes and ladders, and crawl to pursue violators or trespassers. Employees engage in such exertions when on patrol, responding to alarms, pursuing suspects, participating in weapon qualification/training or other training and similar related activities. The continuing demands of the work are such that a prescribed level of physical proficiency must be maintained and demonstrated in order to perform assignments in an acceptable manner. On occasion, the work may be sedentary requiring long hours of sitting, with limited physical movement.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Performance of duties often involves frequent exposure to life/health threatening situations, items, materials, or radiation. Posts and patrols are often located in or near facilities used for manufacturing/testing/storage of explosives; chemical agents; and Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E)/storage. Climatic conditions encountered vary from extreme heat to extreme cold often without benefit of comfortable shelter. Regular use of specialized protective equipment/clothing, which causes considerable personnel discomfort and/or inconvenience, is also required. Encounters with armed and dangerous personnel may occur.
