The NSF is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Policy and Communications Analyst within the National Science Board Office (NSBO), Alexandria, VA.
The National Science Board (NSB, Board) helps govern the National Science Foundation (NSF), establishes policies for the NSF, and provides independent national science and engineering policy advice to the President and the Congress.
The Board oversees NSF as it carries out its mission to promote the progress of science by supporting research and education. The Board establishes NSF policies, identifies issues that are critical to NSF’s future, approves annual budget submissions to the Office of Management and Budget, approves major awards, and consults with the Director on new programs. The Board analyzes NSF’s budget to ensure progress and consistency along the strategic direction set for NSF and to ensure balance between initiatives and core programs.
In its role as policy advisor to the President and the Congress, the Board initiates and conducts studies on a broad range of policy topics related to science and engineering research and education, presents the results and Board recommendations in reports to the President and the Congress, and makes these documents available to the research and educational communities and the public. On a biennial basis, the Board publishes Science and Engineering Indicators, a detailed examination of the state of science and engineering in the United States. Through its major policy studies, the Board makes important contributions to the national policy debate on critical issues in science and engineering.
The National Science Board Office (NSBO) advises and assists the Board. This includes administrative, communications, operational and policy support to the Board and coordination with NSF. NSBO staff liaisons, along with executive secretaries selected from throughout NSF, support the activities of the Board’s five standing committees and a variety of ad hoc committees, subcommittees, and task forces. This Policy and Communications Analyst position is in the NSBO within NSF headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. It requires frequent direct contact with Board members, NSF senior management and staff, and various high-level officials outside of NSF.

As Policy and Communications Analyst, the incumbent is responsible for providing the Board with support in its deliberations and on both national and NSF-specific science and engineering policy and stakeholder engagement issues. This is conducted both through support for regular Board activities and special assignments and projects.
The Policy and Communications Analyst is expected to work with minimal guidance, to exercise independent judgment and initiative, and to handle sensitive or confidential matters related to the Board. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
