Summary

This position is located on the staff of the Deputy Director (DD), Library Technical Services Department (DLT). The incumbent is responsible for planning, developing, and administering the Library's full range of technical services operations, which support the research needs of the National Gallery of Art and its Center for Advanced Studies of the Visual Arts, international art scholars, other museum professionals, educators, and the local art community. Departmental functions include processes for acquiring library collection materials by purchase, gift, and exchange; cataloging library materials for addition to the collections and to local and international databases, and labeling, preserving, and formatting library materials.

Help

The incumbent:

  • Evaluates the library’s manual and automated systems and procedures for acquisitions, cataloging, and processing activities and recommends enhancements to improve their efficiency.
  • Directs the library’s binding and conservation activities, including minor repairs completed in-house and contracted services for photo-reproduction and digital reformatting.
  • Formulates long- and short-term plans.
  • Prepares and tracks departmental budgets.
  • Directly supervises a dozen or more librarians and library support staff.
  • Establishes departmental policies and procedures within the framework of approved Gallery and library guidelines.
  • Performs the full range of first-line supervisory duties.
  • In cooperation with the head of reader services, supports the library’s collection development program by evaluating and recommending sources for library acquisitions based on knowledge of the art publishing industry and sources for out-of-print materials, by developing, monitoring, and revising vendor profiles for library approval plans, and by directing acquisition of special requests from Gallery and CASVA staff.
  • Assists the head of reader services with formulating long- and short-term plans for library collection development.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the next lower grade or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector.

For this position candidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-12 grade level administering a library's acquisitions and cataloging operations.

Successful candidates must have completed at least a Bachelor's degree at an accredited college or university, which included a combination of at least 24 semester hours in library science and information technology.

Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates.

  • Ability to oversee library technical services information systems and procedures.
  • Skill in leading and supervising others.
  • Knowledge of library collection development.

EDUCATION: This position has a positive education requirement.

Must have completed at least a Bachelor's degree at an accredited college or university, which included a combination of at least 24 semester hours in library science and information technology.
