Duties

Help

As an ARCHIVES TECHNICIAN, GS-1421-5/6, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:

  • Declassification: Review files, segments of a series or entire series of security classified records to determine whether they may be declassified and made available for research use. Identify sensitive areas requiring new delegation of authority by agencies to NARA and areas where clearer guidelines are required. Withdraw sensitive materials from files and maintains records of actions taken. Work with agency reviewers for in-house coordination of declassification questions.
  • Arrangement: Perform detailed and relatively difficult arrangement work after the general plan of arrangement has been approved by supervisor. Study documents for identification and verify them against appropriate finding aids to determine the correct arrangement and detects missing and misfiled items and enclosures that have been separated from covering communications.
  • Preservation and Rehabilitation: In connection with other duties, assumes immediate responsibility for accomplishing particular repair and rehabilitation projects with or without the aid of other archives technicians.
  • Description and Publication: Prepare initial descriptions of newly accessioned records according to established format. Prepare other documentation such as change of holdings forms or Master Location Register data collection forms as necessary to ensure archival control of newly accessioned or relocated records.
  • Accessioning and Disposal: Assist in effecting the physical transfer of records to or from the National Archives including overseeing necessary segregating, packing, labeling and shelving activities, locating and marking records and record groups authorized for disposal, making arrangements for the expeditious removal of old records or placement of new records in the stacks by directing the work of laborers in locating records or directing the placement of records in proper order in the stack area.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS-05 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:
GS-05:
Candidates must have had one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-04 in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies to perform successfully the duties of the position as described above, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience for this grade level include: performing archival activities such as declassification, reference service, accessioning, description, preservation, holdings maintenance, transfer, and disposal.

Education may be substituted for experience, GS-5: Four years of college education from an accredited educational institution leading to a bachelor's degree or 120 hours of progressively higher level college education from an accredited educational institution. If qualifying based on education, transcripts must be provided.

Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of qualifying education and experience may be used to meet the total requirements of this position.

You may qualify at the GS-06 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:
GS-06: Candidates must have had one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-05 in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector . Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position as described above, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience for this grade level include: performing increasingly complex archival activities such as declassification processing, reference service, accessioning, holdings description, preservation, holdings maintenance, transfer, and proper classified documents disposal.

Education may be substituted for experience, GS-6: At least 1/2 year of appropriate graduate education (9 semester hours or 13.5 quarter hours) from an accredited educational institution in a related field, such as library or archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government may be considered as qualifying for this position.

Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of experience and graduate education from an accredited educational institution may be used to meet the total requirements for this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
