This position is part of the Division of Refuge Law Enforcement. As a Land Management Law Enforcement Officer you will you will serve as commissioned law enforcement officer performing law enforcement duties.

These are permanent, full-time position(s) with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Position(s) will be filled at the National Wildlife Refuge in Division of Refuge Law Enforcement. This position is a commissioned Federal law enforcement officer. The primary purpose of the position is to perform law enforcement duties that are integral to protection of natural, cultural and human resources through the investigation, apprehension and detention of individuals suspected or convicted of offenses against the criminal laws of the United States.

Help

As a Land Management Law Enforcement Officer, you will serve as commissioned law enforcement officer performing law enforcement duties. These duties include:

  • Detect, investigate, apprehend, detain, arrest, and/or issue citations and file criminal complaints
  • Prosecute violators of a variety of law enforcement acts, laws, rules, and regulations that have been enacted to insure the protection and safe use of national wildlife refuge resources
  • Investigate the occurrence of criminal activity, arson, illegal hunting and fishing, disturbance of fish and wildlife, firearms violations, timber theft, hazardous material violations or dumping, vandalism, theft or disturbance of archeological resources, illegal harvesting of plants and animals, traffic violations, marijuana cultivation, use or sale of illegal drugs, crimes against persons or property, and trespassing on Service lands
  • Investigate violation of applicable Federal and State fish and wildlife laws including poaching, illegal hunting of waterfowl, illegal use of aircraft for hunting migratory waterfowl and commercial fishing
  • Enforce applicable laws and regulations concerning the possession, use, distribution, trafficking, cultivation, and manufacture of controlled substances on Service lands
  • Prepare investigations or case reports by documenting findings and facts, obtaining witness statements and copies of official records, and including pertinent evidence, correspondence, maps, historical information, exhibits, and photographs

Conditions of Employment:

  • 37th BIRTHDAY: The maximum entry-age for this position shall not exceed age 37, unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian law enforcement (or firefighter, if applicable) experience, or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form DD214 (DD-214) along with a Standard Form 15(if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with instructions in this vacancy announcement. Failure to provide this documentation with your application will result in loss of eligibility to receive a waiver of the maximum entry age requirement. You must indicate your date of birth on your application/resume due to the age requirement of the position convicted of such an offense. False or fraudulent information provided by candidates is criminally punishable by fine or imprisonment (Title 18 U.S.C., Section 1001).
  • Firearms: Qualify to carry and use firearms. Maintain a minimum 80% proficiency with assigned firearms throughout tenure.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS-05 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:

  1. 4 academic years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree or bachelor's degree; OR
  2. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your ability in assisting in conducting research for developing and presenting briefings, lectures, multi-media shows, structured talks, impromptu talks, guided tours, and other presentations on refuge or park resources; and knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations, and policies relating to the protection and use of refuge or park resources; OR
  3. A combination of education and experience as listed above.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

PROOF OF EDUCATION: All applicants who are using education or a combination of education and experience to qualify must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, institution name, and student name. If any required coursework is not easily recognizable on transcripts, or if you believe a portion of a particular course can be credited toward meeting an educational requirement, you must also provide a memorandum on letterhead from the institution's registrar, dean, or other appropriate official stating the percentage of the course that should be considered to meet the requirement and the equivalent number of units. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable; however, if you are selected for the position, you will be required to produce the original official transcripts.

PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

Conditions of Employment:

  • All applicants will be required to complete the Land Management Police Training (LMPT) academy (up to 18 weeks) at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), and Federal Wildlife Officer Basic Training (FWOBT) at the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC - up to 4 weeks). Upon completion of LMPT and FWOBT, officers will also be required to complete the (up to 12 week) Field Training Evaluation Program (FTEP). Applicants shall be terminated if they fail to successfully complete all training courses and/or meet the requirements.
  • Maybe required to relocate within U.S based on needs of the agency.
  • Require to obtain and wear an official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform.
  • Must be able to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle. A valid state driver's license is required.
  • Require to submit an SF-78, Certificate of Medical Examination, if the form is not already on file.
  • Require to accept, maintain, and exercise law enforcement authority.
  • THIS IS A DRUG TESTING DESIGNATED POSITION. Applicant(s) tentatively selected for this position will be required prior to appointment to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use. As a condition of continued employment in this position, incumbent(s) will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • This position sensitivity level has been designated as critical sensitive. The selectee must undergo a Background Investigation (BI) prior to appointment.
  • Lautenberg Amendment: This position authorized the incumbent to carry a firearm. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition (Title 18, U.S.C. Section 922(g)(9). Candidates under consideration will be required to certify whether they have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
  • Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required prior to appointment to pass a medical examination, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center's (FLETC), Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) test, and a psychological screen. Applicants shall be disqualified for appointment if they fail to meet any physical requirements or fail to obtain final medical clearance.

Conditions of Employment:
  • The employee selected may be required to work a non-standard tour of duty that may include weekends, holidays, and night shifts.
