The selectee for this position will serve as a Wildlife Biologist in the Wildlife Management Section, Environmental Security of MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON.

This position has promotion potential to the GS-11 grade level. If selected below the full performance level, incumbent may be noncompetitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. Help

  • Apply a broad range of wildlife conversation principles and techniques to managing populations of federal and state listed species and their habitats.
  • Interpret environmental laws with regard to training, construction, and facilities maintenance projects in compliance with applicable federal legislation and national programs for protection of natural resources.
  • Coordinate with conservation agencies, biological consultants, universities and private researchers to plan, develop and implement wildlife/fisheries populations and habitat management studies, surveys and improvement projects.
  • Manage federal and state listed threatened, endangered and sensitive species and their habitats.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Incumbent will be required to work alone, without supervision outdoors in varying weather conditions during daylight and nighttime. Incumbent may be required to work for up to eight hours without a formal break. Work may involve hiking over uneven terrain, stooping, bending, balancing, working in an awkward position, wading in streams, ponds and lakes, crossing moving water, climbing hills, trees and structures, crawling, movement through dense vegetation, and remaining in sitting or lying positions for long periods of time.
Work involves handling wild animals and chemical used to immobilize/euthanized animals. Incumbent may be exposed to potential injury from wild and domestic animals, animal fecal matter/tissues and exposure to diseases transmitted from animals to man.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Approximately 25% of the work is accomplished in the field away from modern convinces. Approximately 75% is accomplished in an office setting. Field work occurs in all weather conditions during daylight and at night. The incumbent works in undeveloped areas containing poison oak, stinging needle, insects, quicksand, soft or rocky substrates, and dangerous wildlife. Work in developed areas is often in parts of buildings/structure that are not designed as working areas. Some work may be closed environments or poorly illuminated environments. The duties involve driving on improved and unimproved roads, jeep trails and off-road. Working with wildlife immobilization/euthanasia chemicals, capturing and handling wildlife species, flying in fixed wing and rotor aircraft for wildlife/resource surveys, climbing trees and cliffs.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position, your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are being considered. Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:
Applicants must possess a bachelors degree in biological science that included at least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects. (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet zoology requirements where appropriate.); and at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant science.

OR

Posses a combination of education and experience equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e. at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position:
GS-09: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: applying principles and concepts of wildlife management habitat, fish and wildlife surveys, suitability evaluations, wetland delineation, and or natural resources research studies.

OR

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (GS-09): Successfully completed 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

OR

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (GS-09): Posses a combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal on hundred percent.

GS-11: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: applying the principles and concepts of management for threatened and endangered species, migratory birds, wetlands, and other sensitive natural resources.

OR

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (GS-11): Successfully completed 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

OR

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (GS-11): Possess a combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.
