Duties

Help

  • Serve as a command technical consultant/representative to activities, installations, headquarters and professional committees.
  • Provides consultation service and staff assistance visit to command-wide (in and outside the U.S.) installations.
  • Evaluates, interprets, and recommends policy, procedures, engineering criteria, standards, and techniques essential to design, operation and maintenance of effective and economical fire protection and detection systems for various types of faculties.
  • Coordinate projects with other engineers in other disciplines or with architects.
  • Keeps abreast of emerging technologies to ensure programmed development will not prematurely become obsolete.
  • Complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-12) or equivalent. Specialized experience must include professional knowledge of Fire Protection Engineering principles and practices applicable to the full range of engineering duties concerned with design of facilities with fire protection and detection systems necessary to serve as a Command technical authority for these systems. Responsible for providing expert advise on the interpretation and implementation of technical fire protection policy directives and programs, as well as review of plans and specifications for complex projects at all respective installations. Knowledge and skills necessary to develop, revise and maintain agency fire protection engineering guide specifications and criteria, as well as portions of agency technical handbooks for guidance of agency engineering specialists, and to furnish advise in the use and interpretation of assigned technical guides.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of fire protection, life-safety and environmental principals, practices, procedures, laws, regulations and other current issues to make complex technical and professional decisions.
2. knowledge of construction standards, methods, practices and techniques, materials, and equipment to determine compliance with regulations and standards.
3. Knowledge of environmental principles, practices, practices, procedures, law, regulation and current legislative issues as they related to fire protection systems and materials.
4. Knowledge of standard contracting regulations, practices, and procedures.
5. Ability to plan, develop, implement and coordinate a complete Fire Protection Program.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

IF USING EDUCATION TO QUALIFY: You MUST provide transcripts to support your educational claims. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
