Help

The following are the duties of this position at the CN-52 (Equivalent to GS-12). If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

  • Serve as a primary advisor for the development of bureau internal and external communication plans. Recommend approaches, specific topics, or issues to be emphasized and the most effective approach to use for intended audience. Evaluate impact and effectiveness of communication plans and advise management. Recommend changes to approaches, materials, emphasis, and/or other methods or techniques to expand and improve communications between CFPB and various audiences. Develop and apply new approaches by developing or evaluating the public’s understanding of the CFPB’s work.
  • Develop and write information materials designed to reach selected audiences through the news media such as radio, television, newspapers, magazines, the web, and/or mobile media based internet technology. Written materials may include news releases, fact sheets, Bureau statements, briefing materials, talking points, and remarks as needed. Establish and maintain contact with management officials to obtain background materials, views, and interpretations.
  • Establish, develop, and maintain effective working relationships with members of all information media; including, news reporters, news directors, editors, syndicated writers, and television and radio hosts and producers. Responsible for all major aspects of coordinating press outreach, including proactively researching press contacts, maintaining up-to-date press contact list, copy editing and sending out press materials, fielding and directing incoming press questions appropriately, and ensuring that the press outreach aspects of the website are updated. Promote the public interest in conveying pertinent information.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized experience: For the CN-52, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the CN-51grade level in the Federal service (For qualification purposes, the CN-51 is broadly equivalent to the GS-11). Specialized experience for this position includes:

• Planning, coordinating, and implementing comprehensive communication plans to convey information regarding organizational program on a regional or national level; AND

• Developing written and other materials (e.g., brochures, fact sheets, talking points, press releases, website content, advertisements, etc.) to convey information concerning a program to stakeholders; AND

• Utilizing the press to promote and support organizational activities and objectives; AND

• Responding to press inquiries; AND

• Developing program communication goals, objectives and policies.

Specialized experience: For the CN-51, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the CN-40 grade level in the Federal service (For qualification purposes, the CN-40 is broadly equivalent to the GS-09). Specialized experience for this position includes:

• Developing new information materials including news releases, fact sheets, brochures, etc., that increase communication with the agency's audiences; AND

• Developing written information materials for dissemination through a variety of media; AND

• Determining the most appropriate means for transmitting information; AND

• Reviewing plans developed to communicate with targeted audience; AND

• Responding to requests for information concerning agency programs and services. OR

You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related. OR A combination of experience and education.

Specialized experience: For the CN-40, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the CN-30 grade level in the Federal service (For qualification purposes, the CN-30 is broadly equivalent to the GS-07). Specialized experience for this position includes:

• Writing articles on routine events of non-controversial subjects; AND

• Assisting in the creation of news releases for print and electronic use; AND

• Responding to written or verbal media/public queries; AND

• Assisting in planning and coordination of communication campaigns; AND

• Conducting social media communications. OR

You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B or J.D., if related. OR A combination of experience and education.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- A one year probationary period may be required.
- Must successfully complete a background investigation.
- Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency
- If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.

Applicants must submit a writing sample as part of their application that demonstrates their writing communication and subject matter expertise. The sample can be a work product from a current or previous occupation or another document that demonstrates the requirements. The writing sample should demonstrate your ability to develop press materials for public release. This work sample can be a press release, prepared remarks (Should be complete and not in bullet point format), article, op-ed, or fact sheet.
